Aim: Enter now to support Cancer Research UK and win a unique, hand painted, rocking horse. Your entry makes a real difference—thank you!
Piccolo is a vintage Norton and Barker, wooden rocking horse, that was hand carved in Birmingham in the 1920's- 1930's. He has been lovingly and uniquely refurbished by Ellen Wilkinson.
He has a real horsehair mane and tail, with hand painted glass eyes, and lifelike paint work that follows the natural direction of a real horses coat.
Piccolo has a fully removable, hand stitched, double bridle, and a straight cut saddle, with a pigskin seat, that is fixed to the horse.
His stand is made new from reclaimed timber which finishes him off perfectly and means his strong and fit for another 100 years.
He is a large horse and measures approximately 48" ( 122cm) tall to the highest point of his neck. He has a 25" body length, and would have been made to carry a large child or small adult. His stand is 54" in length and 18" wide.
I refurbish these pieces principally as art works, they were originally designed as functional toys and riding aids and I believe he is still fit for purpose, but please remember he was made approximately 95 years ago, and health and safety may not be up to todays standards. So please don't leave children unsupervised on him.
A truly, one of a kind piece, that would be a fantastic heirloom.
This was how he looked when I bought him. A sorry state, overpainted with gloss, with no original paint remaining at all. His teeth where bright red and his stand was a mishmash of green paint that had been partly stripped and was badly warped and full of nails.
I wasn't quite sure what to do with him at first, I couldn't visualise how I could bring him back to life. However, as soon as his new eyes went in, I could see his mischievous character shine thorough and chose to paint him as a flea bitten grey. He looks very Arabian in my opinion with his dished face, compact body and fine limbs.
I do hope he will be loved by whoever wins him. I know that not everyone has the room for something like this in their home, but it is a dream to own one for many.
I spotted Piccolo for sale locally on Facebook marketplace, as I'm always looking for old unloved wooden horses that are in need of a makeover. When I went to collect him, I learned that his lovely owner had been diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer.
Although rocking horse refurbishment is the way I make a living, I felt uncomfortable using this one to turn a profit. I felt he could serve a greater purpose and knew I wanted to use him to raise some money for the previous owners chosen charity, Cancer research UK.
Cancer is a disease that has impacted so many peoples lives. I lost 2 of my grandparents to it, and so many of my friends parents when I was growing up. Cancer Research UK are doing so much ground breaking work to find cures, it really is a worthy cause that I am very keen to support.
I initially thought of selling him, and donating the profit, but I spotted a Crowdfunder email about running prize draws, and I thought it would be a great idea. This way it will not only support the charity, but also give someone, who may not have the means to buy one of my artworks, the opportunity to own one. So it's a win, win for me.
All of the money raised after costs (£1650 plus any Crowdfunder fees) will be donated to Cancer research UK. I am happy to disclose a full list of costs on request.
