Aim

With a new community gardening group, we want 18th century plants, historic planting, go further with garden restoration, for the Grotto.

Friends of William Champion’s Garden has spent 5 years conserving and restoring the Quaker meditative Chequered Wall Garden, with the grotto, tree lined walks, 30 foot Neptune statue, wood, flowing stream, and echoing pond - an integral part of an early scientific Industrial Revolution community with its pioneering recycling, water power, pumped by the largest Newcomen 'fire' engine (before James Watt's improved steam engine in the 1760's), workers housing intertwined with slavery, child and women cheap labour in the Clocktower pin factory, and a brass mill.
