We want to make our memorial garden a calm and peaceful place for wildlife where visitors can remember those who sadly lost their lives.
Our museum is run entirely by volunteers and funded by donations and fund-raising coffee mornings. We maintain the Miners Memorial Garden, which we think would be improved by making it more wildlife friendly with fruit trees, which would supply the local food bank, bird and insect friendly trees, and flowering cherry trees, shrubs and scented plants as well as a hedgehog house, bird boxes and insect hotel to attract wildlife to the garden.
We need to clear a lot of the existing planting to make way for new, insect friendly plants and trees as well as making space for the hedgehog house and a large insect hotel. More bird feeders will be put up on the trees as well creating a calm environment where people can sit an listen to the birds and bees while remembering those miners who died at Bilsthorpe Colliery.
This project could also encourage differently abled residents to get involved in the planting and volunteering at the museum, as well as involving Blidworth Men in Sheds in the making of the hedgehog house and insect hotel, this would be a boost to their wellbeing and self-esteem.
