Aim

We want to expose how private equity funds are buying up companies paid by the NHS to tackle waiting lists. Please support our research.

The NHS backlog has created a growing market for private companies paid to carry out extra work in NHS hospitals.

These companies are known as “insourcing firms.” They provide clinical teams who carry out procedures in NHS hospitals outside normal working hours, using NHS facilities.

Now there are growing signs that private equity firms, many based overseas, are buying up these companies.

Private equity investors specialise in generating high returns for shareholders. When they move into essential public services, the consequences can be serious.

That’s why EveryDoctor wants to investigate what is really happening.

Why This Matters

The NHS backlog is one of the biggest challenges facing the health service today.

Insourcing firms are increasingly being used to carry out extra work in NHS hospitals to help tackle waiting lists. Industry insiders are predicting that public spending on these services will rise significantly.

This makes the sector increasingly attractive to investors.

We have already seen what can happen when private equity firms move into essential public services:

  • Water companies burdened with debt while infrastructure deteriorates
  • Local authorities struggling with the high costs of private equity-run special needs schools
  • Care providers collapsing under unsustainable financial structures

The NHS should never become another opportunity for global investment firms to extract profit.

Before private equity involvement grows further, the public deserves to know who owns these companies and how NHS money is being used.

What We Plan To Investigate

EveryDoctor wants to uncover the scale of private equity involvement in NHS insourcing companies.

To do this, we plan to:

  • Send Freedom of Information requests to more than 60 NHS trusts to understand which companies are being contracted to carry out insourced work
  • Analyse company accounts and ownership structures to identify which firms have been acquired by private equity investors
  • Build a clearer picture of how public NHS funding may be flowing to private equity-backed companies
  • Tell as many people as we possibly can what’s going on

This research will take time and careful analysis, but it is essential if the public is to understand how private investment may be shaping the future of NHS services.

Why EveryDoctor Is Doing This Work

EveryDoctor is a campaigning organisation led by NHS doctors and staff. Since 2019 we have been investigating and exposing the growing role of private interests in the NHS.

In the last year alone, our research has:

  • Revealed how NHS trusts struggling with repairs remain trapped in costly contracts benefiting investment firms
  • Highlighted political donations linked to individuals and organisations connected to the private healthcare industry
  • Provided a platform for NHS whistleblowers raising concerns about corridor care

Our investigations help bring transparency to issues that often receive too little scrutiny.

Why Your Support Matters

Investigating corporate ownership structures and NHS contracting arrangements takes time, expertise and resources.

Mainstream media outlets often struggle to carry out this type of detailed investigation into NHS profiteering.

EveryDoctor’s research and campaigning work reaches millions of people across the UK, helping to inform public debate about the future of the NHS.

Your support helps us continue this work by funding the research, analysis and communication needed to ensure the public understands what is happening.

We cannot predict what the evidence will reveal, but we believe the public has a right to know.

Join Us

Private equity firms are already moving into parts of the NHS system.

Before this trend grows further, the public deserves transparency about who is involved and how NHS funding is being used.

With your support, we can carry out the investigative work needed to uncover the facts.

Help us shine a light on private equity involvement in NHS insourcing.
