Why I’m Building When I Get Older, we’ve all been asked at some point, “What do you want to be when you get older”

This started at home.

When my son turned 15, people began asking him a question that sounds simple but feels huge:

“What do you want to do when you leave school?”

His answer was always the same:

“I don’t know.”

As a parent, that’s hard to hear — not because there’s anything wrong with not knowing, but because the pressure to have an answer comes so early, and the support to find one doesn’t.

I watched him scroll through endless career websites, overwhelmed by job titles, qualifications, and conflicting advice. School guidance was limited. Online searches led to more confusion. And I realised something important:

He didn’t need telling what to be.

He needed help understanding his options.

That’s when the idea for When I Get Older was born.

What Is When I Get Older?

When I Get Older is a digital guidance platform built to help teenagers and young adults move from “I don’t know” to “I know my next step.”

It’s designed to:

• Help young people explore careers based on their interests
• Explain pathways in plain English
• Show what subjects, courses, or skills actually matter
• Build confidence with CVs and interview practice
• Give parents a way to support without pressure

No jargon. No judgement. Just clarity.

Why This Matters

Too many young people feel like they’re failing simply because they don’t have their future figured out at 15, 16, or even 18.

That leads to:

• Poor course choices
• Dropping out
• Low confidence
• Wasted time and money

I believe uncertainty shouldn’t feel like failure — it should feel like a starting point.

I’m crowdfunding When I Get Older because this isn’t just a business idea — it’s a mission.
