What is Well Projects about?

Well Projects is an artist-led project space run by Emily Whitebread, George Harding, Kris Lock, Sean B Goldring & Hattie Pierce.

In September 2018 we moved into to a disused shopfront on Northdown Road, Cliftonville, renovated and refitted the space, including removing six walls, constructing two new ceilings and acoustically treating the basement floor.  We then registered as a Community Interest Company in order to formalise our commitment to the community of Margate.

At Well Projects we aim to facilitate excellent artist development opportunities and showcase a programme of contemporary art exhibitions, reading groups, performance and live events; as well as hosting a variety of workshops for anyone interested in learning creative and practical skills.

Our goal is for Well Projects to become a mainstay in a continually evolving and exciting creative community, and offer a welcoming space for cultural exchange on Northdown Road. All money made at Well Projects goes straight into paying artists fairly for their work, and making sure that events are open and as accessible as possible to all.

For all this to continue, we need your support!

Who is Well Projects for?

Over the last year we have worked with over 60 artists, musicians and academics on 23 exhibitions and events. Building a cross-disciplinary community with interests in the arts, music, ecology, geography and technology and have also helped to support Margate’s amazing local music scene.

We want to build on our successes thus far, and be able to make the best of our dedicated team, great space and wonderful community by providing regular opportunities for a variety of people to get involved, and also work more closely with local people and institutions. We want Well Projects to be for the whole community with something for everyone’s creative interests.

What do we need?

Over the last year we’ve worked very hard to create a bright and welcoming gallery space, an intimate live room, an almost-ready recording room, and a Risograph print press.

In 2020 we are ready to put into action a revised business model that combines public funding grants, sales generated by our Risograph press and affordable space hire that makes use of our music practice space. We have planned a more structured year-long public programme that will allow us to be open longer and more regularly, centered around 10 contemporary art exhibitions and many performance events, reading groups, workshops and live music nights.

With your help we intend to

  • Buy essential equipment to improve our print press, including new risograph ink drums, book binding equipment and plan chests.
  • Buy new essential music equipment so we can provide an open and affordable music practice and recording space
  • Buy new gallery equipment to improve the scope of our exhibitions including good quality audio-visual equipment, better lighting and installation tools
  • Make improvements to our online presence and marketing strategy to reach a wider audience, make us more accessible and put us on the Kent cultural map.
  • Contribute to our public programme fund so that we can extend our services and support to creative practitioners through artists development and residency opportunities.
  • Ensure that all our opportunities are paid opportunities

We are looking to raise £8000.00 to do this, which will:

  • Help to make Well Projects financially self-sufficient to ensure its longevity and impact within our communities.
  • Massively benefit the people that make use of the space as the funds we raise will immediately be invested into our programme, as per our long term business plan, and the equipment we buy will remain within the community sphere which is guaranteed by our ‘community interest’ status.

Your support will enable Well Projects to become more secure so that we can focus on supporting more artists and practitioners, creating more paid opportunities for locals and providing exceptional facilities and experiences for the communities we engage with.

Testimonial from Amy Lay-Pettifer and Jennifer Boyd (SHELL LIKE)

'The experience of showing at Well Projects was a pleasure from start to finish, in large part because Kris and George were so caring and thorough in their approach. While it's perhaps not surprising that an artist led collective would instinctively understand what conditions other artists might need to make their work, it is rare for this to be hand in hand with real attention to detail and a high level of organisation and communication. Not to mention generosity. The entire experience was really special for us; it allowed us to grow three existing artist collaborations, to forge an entirely new one and to come away with some very valuable learnings about our own practice as SHELL LIKE. Both we, and the artists we brought in, were treated with real warmth and care, something we value highly and felt was a kindred thread between our two projects.

We're thrilled to be associated with Well Projects and are always impressed and inspired by what they do. Projects of its singular ambition, tenderness, strangeness are so valuable both in and outside of artist communities and especially outside of London.'
