Waunarlwydd Rugby Club is a local rugby club based in South Wales that has served the local community for over 120 years. In that time it has helped to instil the values that rugby is famous for into a huge number of men and women, both on and off the field.
Waunarlwydd RFC currently runs two senior sides, youth team and a full junior section, catering for all ages and abilities. The 1st XV compete in the Admiral National League 1 West Central. In addition to this the club also has a highly successful youth and junior section.
We pride ourselves in our development, this is no better represented by a long line of international players stretching back to our first in 1913 all the way up to the present day with
- current Wales and British Lions International Liam Williams
- Siwan Lillicrap captain of the Welsh Women’s Senior team
- Welsh International Nicky Smith
- Scott Otten recently completing 100 appearances for the Ospreys
- Current Ospreys players Matt Prothero and Keelan Giles
We currently have over 300 registered players with an age range of 3 to 53. There are over 1000 members of the community regularly interacting with the club.
The Club has played an important role during the Covid crisis within the local community, where the club house was used as a hub for a food bank for local people. The local village schools have had the use of the club for their events and fund raisers and children's leaving prom parties.
The club is also a central factor in the village annual Carnival week. This is a week full of events bringing the whole community together as well as raising thousands of pounds for local and national charities.
This year the club has plans to build a new state of the art club house. The current club house, built in the 70s, is no longer fit for purpose and beyond economic repair to provide all of its members with a modern and suitable facility.
The new clubhouse will have 2 function suites, in house changing facilities a gym and physiotherapy room. Funds have been secured to build the structure but further funding is required to complete the internal fit out.
With the growing demand of new members to the club we desperately need to be able to offer facilities for the mixture of boys and girls junior members as well as our adult members.
Our club has grown rapidly in recent years with rugby fun sessions being introduced for toddlers to age six, two new darts teams a ladies and a mens team, a monthly book club, a weekly slimming club and a weekly quiz session.
These new community based activities are helping the local villagers to socialise improving mental health and wellbeing and would be able to continue to grow in the new clubhouse.
The plan is to build a new state of the art clubhouse alongside our playing fields. Our current clubhouse is not alongside the rugby fields which can cause problems for anybody with mobility issues, safety issues with children having to walk from the pitch to the clubhouse and also to the changing rooms.
The new clubhouse will alleviate the above issues as it will directly over look the rugby pitches. With the new club on pitch side the children will be able to use shower facilities after games and be able to enjoy refreshments inside the new club rather than being served from a cabin on pitch side.
The new club will be have a much wider offering both at weekends and also during the week to the local schools and charitable organisations. The new club will also have over 30 parking spaces which parents of the local Welsh school will benefit from using during school pick up and drop offs.
We are in a position to build a new club, however due to the Covid 19 pandemic several of the clubs major fund raising activities were cancelled. Events such as bonfire night, Christmas parties, presentation evenings, visiting teams and rugby international fixtures were cancelled for almost two whole years. These events would have provided us with vital funds needed to furnish, decorate and equip the new clubhouse.
To make sure this project happens there is a need to raise additional funding. This funding will help the club be more accessible, provide better facilities for future generations and allow the club to grow and develop in different directions.
