A sensory dance-digital performance connecting & awakening audiences to the beauty and fragility of our oceans.

Water Bodies is a collaborative digital-dance performance with social change at its heart.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that we all need to put more care into preserving our beautiful seas. But it is so easy to ignore an underwater world we rarely see. How many sea creatures have you met today? How many frothy waves have you jumped over?

But most of us do know how it sounds when the waves crash against the rocks. We understand the feeling of the salt spray on our skin and the warm sand under our feet.

Water Bodies is a performance using a unique blend of dance, theatre, film, digital effects and live camera feed to re-connect the audience to everything ocean.

Compelling visuals and dance immerse the audience in a sensory experience of shared seaside memories, against a backdrop of concern for our seas and sea-life.

In Water Bodies, the wild freedom of the sea and the serene beauty of an underwater world clash with plastics and ignorance, in a fusion of water visuals and corporal dance-theatre.

Water Bodies is a reminder of both the ocean’s beauty and its fragility. It is both charmingly nostalgic and a stark warning of what it means to disregard our planet.

“I have lived near the coast for most of my life – and when I wasn’t, I missed it like a friend. When I came home after long periods away, I could smell the sea and it reminded me of how much I had longed to be near it again”. (Ester Tal)

There are approximately 34,000 fish species, an estimated 3.5 trillion fish in total. In 2014, the estimated amount of microplastics ranged from 15 to 51 trillion pieces. Our sea-life is becoming outnumbered.

In recent years, I have been privileged to work with artists who share my interest in making work that matters.

The seas matter to us.

We are a team of 2 filmmakers and 2 dancers working together to make a multi-media performance, in response to our love and ever-growing concern for our oceans.

Australian flamenco and contemporary-based performance-artist, Tomas Arroquero and myself, Ester Tal, are collaborating with award-winning digital artists, Martin Coyne and Jordi Robert.

Both myself and Tomas have a background in flamenco dance with a particular interest in deconstructing its components – body and foot percussion and rhythmic motion – and redesigning it to blend with theatre and contemporary-orientated movement.

Our professional dance careers span over 20 years, the last 5 of which, have centrally focussed on making work extracting exciting flamenco elements to enrich wider-based dance-theatre projects.

Water Bodies is our most exciting collaboration to date.

With accolades to their names - both in the film and art-installation industry – Martin and Jordi make up our amazing projection and digital effects team.

With new artistic methods to explore important themes and reach new audiences, we can make an impact with our work in ways we haven’t been able to previously.

Martin is a regularly commissioned artist, filmmaker and photographer, specialising in projection and interactive media.

And Jordi is a Catalan visual artist with a passion for telling stories through film, photography and video installations.

Together, they are creating exciting visuals to create an immersive audience experience.

We can’t wait to share this experience with you!

Our vision is to complete the performance-making of Water Bodies for a 2020 UK tour.

We were supported by both Pavilion Dance South West, Bournemouth and Trinity Laban, London in our first phase of development. With amazing studio and theatre space at our disposal, we were able to initiate this exciting collaboration.

Now we have completed phase one, we need funds to take Water Bodies to the next level.

We need to develop the work further to take us nearer to our goal for a 2020 tour.

Your donation will:

ENABLE the artists to collaborate and develop the work further

CONTRIBUTE towards the costs of documenting the project for promotion of the performance piece and raise awareness of the pressing ecological issues at its heart.
