Aim

Leather wares designed to last a lifetime. Leather with provenance. Slow, conscious fashion, hand made in every way.

I am using Back her Business in conjunction with Crowdfunder UK to help expand my little business, offering you the chance to have your own piece of leather that will last you lifetime.

WLW ETHOS

Leather is my passion; a lifetime of use is my belief. Inspired by the old ways of crafters, and the want to move away from a throwaway society; I believe the answer to a more sustainable future is to minimise short lived and replaceable items using locally sourced materials. With traditional tools and techniques, I craft beautiful long lasting, repairable wares, that are simple and elegant in design and practical in use.

I work from a small workshop on the Dartmoor National park in Devon, using beautiful leather from the last remaining oak bark tannery in Europe. The provenance of the hides are from south west based beef farmers, the brass and copper hardware is from a family run foundry in Walsall and I use British spun linen thread waxed with bees wax from a local apiary.

Local, Simple, Traditional.

THE MATERIAL

An ancient material, humans have been turning hide to leather for millennia. It has been our companion for an unimaginably long time. With care and love it will out live us, in a GOOD way! It can be repaired, it can be repurposed, it can go back to the land and degrade naturally and without affect to nature.

Oak bark tanning is a very gentle slow process, taking about 12 months to turn hide to leather, protecting the natural fibres and allowing the hide to retain natural features like growth lines and marks and scars, honoring the animal it once was. Oak bark or vegetable tanned leather (leather tanned from any tree bark) uses nothing but water and natural tannins from bark, thus allowing the material to biodegrade and return to the earth

THE FUTURE

I am a small business, working from a small workshop space, with the basic tools that I began with some time ago.

The option to buy more specialist tools and equipment, upgrading many of the old and worn out tools I currently use will let me grow the collection, and expand with new designs and styles to open my doors to new clients. The workshop is in need of press machine, and specialist made die casts. A new skiving knife, replacement of bevels and some new stitch markers and stitching chisels to name a few of the tools needed to be upgraded.

WLW is a one woman business.. and currently is in great need of marketing and brand advice - with your pledges I can employ a Guru to help me learn the skills and knowledge needed in this area.

This crowdfunding initiative will quite honestly change the face of my business and in turn make it even more of an amazing experience for you, my wonderful customers!

WHO AM I

A local lass from Cornwall, now living in Devon. I have always strived to tread gently in the world, and I believe in a life that is far removed from mass production, to live more simply and more gently surrounded by nature.

After spending many years trying to find hard wearing boots, a sturdy bag or a solid belt that doesn't fall apart in a year, I started to wonder if such things were available to the masses. So with skills taken from a childhood mending my own horse tack and horse rugs, the knowledge gained from a 2 day leather working course run by a master saddler, a shelf full of books and a thirst for learning I started designing and making. Over the years I have bought new and second hand tools, built endless work benches and practised until the wee small hours - friends and family benefitted greatly and finally In 2019 I made my dream a reality, Thus Warriner Leather Works was born.
