Since October we've been running a Warm Welcome Space three times a week, providing a hot meal, beverages and friendly support to everyone

by Walney Community Trust in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, United Kingdom

Who are we?

We're a community charity based on Walney, offering support to those in need.  We provide a warm welcoming space 3 times a week with hot meals, drinks, phone chargers and a friendly welcome.

We also act as a contact point for referral onto other agencies such as the food bank and into local initiatives like gas and electric top ups and household support.

Community impact

Our community deeply felt the impact of covid and we were there, right at the heart of it,  offering food parcels, home deliveries and help with prescription collection.   With little respite we've gone straight from one disaster and straight into another - the cost of living crisis.

It might not seem like much,  but three warm meals a week can mean the world to someone struggling to make ends meet.  More than than we offer friendship and the opportunity to get alongside people and help them look for longer term solutions, such as through our budgeting and cooking sessions.

Why are we crowdfunding?

In short because we need support to keep our doors open.   The rising costs of running everything are taking their toll - beyond the energy bills we're all feeling the squeeze of right now it also takes staff to keep these projects going - we strive to pay our staff a fair wage for their work - above national minimum wage where we can but as a charity we can only do that with generous support from those in our community and beyond.

How we’ll spend the money raised

We'll be spending the money raised on ensuring adequate staff numbers to keep our doors open and the food coming!  An average session takes 4 staff members to run.
