Aim

Waltham Forest Council is raising funds for local organisations providing critical support for new and existing refugees and asylum seekers.

As one of the most diverse boroughs in the most diverse city in the world, Waltham Forest has a long and proud history of being a welcoming place. As we did during the Syrian refugee crisis, the Council is welcoming Afghan refugees and asylum seekers into our borough, while at the same time ensuring new arrivals have the necessary support to get settled and find their feet in Waltham Forest.

Local groups and charities are vital to this work. Donations to this crowdfunder will be ring-fenced to support smaller local charities and community groups that are working tirelessly to support new and existing refugees and asylum seekers in Waltham Forest in the months ahead.

Why are we crowdfunding?

This is a global humanitarian crisis, and one which is impacting many families in Waltham Forest. Although this is a tough time for many Waltham Forest residents, there are others whose circumstances allow, who want to help, and this crowdfunder aims to harness the goodwill in the Waltham Forest community in response to that.

How your donation will make a difference

All funds raised will go to community organisations and local charities that are supporting refugees and people seeking asylum in Waltham Forest and beyond.

Your donation could support critical work with refugees and people seeking asylum in the local community, including:

  • Distribution of food and essential supplies through food and baby banks
  • Enhancing access to essential advice services for refugees and people seeking asylum, including health, legal and employment support
  • Delivering new community activities targeted at refugees and which deliver wellbeing benefits, such as increasing access to culture and reducing social isolation.

Allocation of funds

  • Funds raised will be allocated to local community groups and charities through a simple application process. The money will be allocated promptly, with a process administered by Waltham Forest Council and supported by a panel including community representatives.
  • If the amount raised through this appeal is more than the amount awarded to local community groups, all remaining funds will be donated to Care4Calais and Refugee Action.
