For the last few years, Labour Councillors (encouraged by the Greens) have been pushing for more cycle lanes around the Borough, at the same time as introducing blanket 20mph schemes.
The original cycle lane, running from Woodside, through Seacombe, Liscard and to Wallasey Village and New Brighton caused outrage:
- Wheatland Lane
- Liscard Road
- Liscard Way (the precinct!)
- Seaview Road
- Hose Side Road
- Grove Road
- Warren Drive
- Victoria Road
In the years that have followed, the scheme was split into two 'phases'.
Phase one (Woodside to Liscard) was recently approved by councillors to move to the next stage, even though the Council's own consultation showed massive opposition. In Wallasey Ward, 74% of people who took part are opposed to it.
Now, in a shock move, the Town Hall has included both phases in a new, bigger scheme called the 'Combined Active Travel Network'.
This new 'network' is uncosted but would introduce segregated cycle lanes on the roads listed above and also:
- Wallasey Road
- Rake Lane
- Full length of Wallasey Village
- Rest of Harrison Drive
- Bayswater Road
- Leasowe Road
- Pasture Road
- Hoylake Road (linking to Fender Lane)
- Upton Road
- Moreton Road.
In other words, chaos.
Council consultation deadline: 23 September
The next step of the campaign to get the council to think again is to deliver a newsletter to residents, ahead of the deadline of the Council's consultation closing on 23 September.
All the donations received from this appeal will pay for that newsletter - it will be delivered by volunteers.
Depending on how much is raised, any surplus will be used for more newsletters or other publicity.
