Who are we?
We are a project to get more physically disabled people active in Wales, through the sport of Wheelchair Rugby. We will be supporting local initiatives by providing demonstrations of the sport and will have the opportunities to travel outside of the UK to play other developing teams. In time we hope to be able to send qualified coaches to developing countries to help them integrate physically disabled people into sport.
Why are we crowdfunding?
Disability sport still struggles for funding, and although we have made applications to large companies and organisations, they often have their own charitable causes that they support, so a lot of our funding will have to be self raised, through the generosity of local people and businesses. Any one that runs a voluntary organisation will understand how difficult it is to be sustainable and as a new group, we need kit, equipment, venue hire, insurance and help with travel costs. Once again as a disabled group some of our expenses can be hire than other groups, thus the importance of finding as many funding streams as possible.
Wheelchair rugby has helped me hugely with mental health and physical health issues and given me a sense of purpose that I thought was lost after my diagnosis etc. However, I feel a new sense of life has been released and I want to provide that opportunity for as many physically disabled people in Wales as possible.
Community impact
This project can benefit all physically disabled people within Wales. The impact could be immeasurable, as it is impossible to determine exactly how many of the 700,000 disabled in Wales would want to participate in this wonderful sport. It is however certain to improve the lives of those who wish to throw themselves in to it and live the experience. Please go on YouTube and watch some footage of Wheelchair rugby - it is truly amazing!
How you can play your part
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a reality.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
