We want to bring the old Post Office in Lyme Regis back to life as a community asset with a new post office and community waffle house.

by The Community Waffle House CIC in Lyme Regis, Dorset, United Kingdom

What's the aim?

We are raising funds to set-up 'Waffle Lyme'; a community Waffle House for Lyme Regis in partnership with volunteers from Lyme Regis Baptist Church.

What on earth is a Community Waffle House?

'Waffle' was established in Axminster 5 years ago as a not-for-profit with a dream to be a home for the unseen, unheard and the unwanted and a base for community outreach to build the social health of communities. We can't stand loneliness and our passion is supporting communities to become more connected at every level.

Since then, we have partnered with the NHS and  RE:STORE to set up a Waffle House in the unused canteen of Seaton Hospital and have now been offered an opportunity to come to see how we might be able to best support Lyme Regis and complement the amazing work already happening in the town.

With our energetic group of local volunteers, and working closely with NHS social prescribers, we hope to build on the Waffle mission to provide the opportunities and appetite to pursue adventurous, everyday conversations, as we know that relationships lie at the heart of wellbeing and every friendship starts with an (often slightly waffly and slightly risky) interaction.

That could be helping to introduce or reinstate community assets (like a Post Office!)  challenging young people to have more adventurous conversations through schools workshops or simply providing good excuses to reach the loneliest in the community by offering to help trim the hedge or fix an I-phone.

As three young(ish!) Directors that grew up in the local area (two of us went to school in Lyme) we have a real sense of pride in the place that we call home and know how much potential our local communities hold.

Non-profit

We appreciate that there is a healthy amount of skeptisism around organisations that combine elements of business and charity but for us it's simple (and we think, exciting!). We set up Waffle as 100% not-for-profit which means that all our revenue goes back into the communities we serve. The whole point of generating revenue for us, is to build the communities we are in. It also means that our equipment and assets belong to the community if we wanted to sell the business.

As Directors we also made the decision not to be paid more than the living wage, to keep everything simple and transparent.

We only exist because of the generosity of our communities and that means that we are accountable to our communities and take that position seriously.

We need your help!

Whilst we love operating in this way, it does mean that as an organisation, we don't carry any spare cash! With each new project, we need to fundraise to be able to get the project off the ground.

With your support - we would love to be able to furnish and buy the equipment we will need to set up Lyme Regis Waffle House!

Here is a rough costing of some of the items that this funding will go on:

1. Furniture: £10,000

2. Play Area: £5000

3. Extraction/Air con: £15,000

4. Waffle Irons: £3000

5. Kitchen equipment: £25,000+

6. Crockery: £3000

If you have any questions at all, we love an excuse for a waffle so please reach out!
