Aim

Raising money to help cover the remaining costs of production, supporting local business whilst helping emerging talent break into industry.

About us

We are a group of young filmmakers who were brought together during our time at Falmouth University. The COVID19 pandemic struck just as we were preparing to leave University and enter the workforce. Understandably, the effects that this has had on opportunities for graduates who are based regionally has been significant, which is one of the many reasons that this film is important to the crew of Voyager. Whilst we are only a small production, we are aware that there are access problems, having faced them ourselves. Which is why where possible, we want to work with local talent who may not otherwise have the opportunity due to geographical location.

Unfortunately, the impact of the pandemic isn't confined to any one group of people or industry and because we are acutely aware of the devastating impact this global health crisis has had on small businesses, we want to ensure that wherever possible we support local businesses and charities who were there for us when we needed them most.

Our vision

Voyager tells the story of Patti, a sixteen-year-old woman in a world that has been overrun by ruthless industrial development. Patti and her ailing family live a simple but arduous life on a boat that is falling into rapid decay as food and supplies diminish. Upon hearing her beloved Cornish boatyard and home will become the property of industrial moguls to further their development, Patti undertakes a life-changing journey to fight for the area and the people that have had so much already taken from them.

Voyager will be an atmospheric short drawing inspiration from films such as Rosetta, with beautiful locations and a chilling tone telling the story rather than expository dialogue. Our crew will be minimal, partly to ease potential COVID pressures, as well as to keep the filming process as focused and efficient as possible. We also aim to be an environmentally conscious film behind the scenes as well as on the screen, with local crew and minimal cars to reduce fuel usage, as well as a ban of single use plastic items while on set.

We want to tell the story of Voyager to draw attention to the fast-approaching reality that small communities in Cornwall are faced with; one that has been documented far less than the pastoral idealism that the county is known for. Mass property and industry development are affecting small communities within Cornwall, particularly those that choose to live on the edge of society in boat yards. As deforestation rates continue to surge around the world, it is easy to assume the problem lies further afield than our doorstep, but this is not the case. In 2017 only 7% of Cornwall’s CO2 was absorbed by trees, due greatly in part to the lack thereof. In addition, the South West has the most polluted water in the UK, with five separate beaches designated unsuitable for bathing by humans due to poor water quality. We seek to highlight these environmental and social issues in an engaging and thought-provoking manner, using strong and empathetic characters to demonstrate through a dystopian allegory the danger that apathy will enable.

Why we need you

Voyager has been fortunate enough to receive initial support and funding from Falmouth University School of Film & TV Graduate Shorts Fund. But while that support has allowed the idea of Voyager to become a reality, we need additional funding to ensure we can make the film in a way we are morally proud of.

The South West has one of the most distinct and rapidly growing film scenes in the UK, with their picturesque valleys and villages attracting filmmakers from around the world. What makes the area as appealing as it is - as much so as the distinct locations - are local businesses and up-and-coming talent that are there to support the process, giving the county a passion and authenticity that is difficult to find elsewhere. And with creative industries under more threat than ever before due to the current COVID situations, supporting those that make Cornish film what it is has never been more important.

The money you donate will be going towards cast, crew and local businesses to ensure that their assistance does not go uncompensated. All of your money will be going towards supporting young women and men to continue doing what they love, in the place they love.

Fund Distribution

We plan to use the money raised to cover the costs of transportation and catering for cast and crew.

Sustainability

We care about the planet and understand the importance of having low to no impact on our natural surroundings which is why we are working hard in accordance with Albert guidelines to ensure that we are doing everything we can to be environmentally conscious.

We are exploring plans to offset the carbon footprint of this production by planting trees with schemes local to our shooting locations.

Disclaimer

In regards to the fulfilment of rewards, many of these are dependent on the completion of the film. With the ongoing COVID-19 situation there is a possibility that any imposed lockdowns may directly impact the film's expected completion date. Whilst this is an inevitable challenge that we and many others are facing, we are committed to completing this film. It might just arrive a little later than originally expected, and if this is the case we will inform all our supporters, keeping them up to date as the situation evolves.
