YOU ARE AMAZING! This crowdfunded met it's target in exactly 4 hours and 30 minutes. Is that a record? I am so flattered and encouraged!
THANK YOU!
Remarkably, we met the target after only 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Please don't donate any more money - there is a limit about how much a candidate is allowed to spend campaigning.
I asked Crowdfunder to close the project now rather than the six weeks I expected it would need to run!
Excess funds will be donated to MBM - Murray, Blackburn, McKenzie - a remarkable team whose work analysing the political debate surrounding women's rights in Scotland is key. They were described an "antidote to the no debate culture” by Joanna Cherry KC. All women in Scotland benefit from their expertise in navigating legislation and amplifying the voices of women in Scottish politics.
I am so grateful. I will work hard and I won't let you down.
Thank you.
Hello. My name is Elaine Miller. I am standing as an independent candidate in the upcoming Corstorphine/Murrayfield by-election on Thursday 9th March.
I have lived in the ward for 20 years. My three teenage children attended a local playgroup, nursery and schools and my family are regular users of the public parks, sports facilities and resources. I love where I live and I want to give something back.
I believe councillors should always put the needs of the people they serve before any political party. But I think people’s voices are being drowned out by professional politicians.
And I strongly believe that a council which is not representative of the wide range of people living in our community is undemocratic. It is notable, that in recent years there have been very few women candidates here, and only one female councillor, who stood down last year after one term.
Corstorphine/Murrayfield is also at risk of becoming a one-party ward, the only one in Edinburgh. I think this is bad for democracy as it would mean that the Lib Dem manifesto could have more influence on local decisions than the views of the community. Our area needs a range of voices in the council chamber.
As an independent voice for Corstorphine Murrayfield, I will have the freedom to act and vote solely in the interests of local residents and be forceful and effective in the scrutiny of decisions which affect our area and the city.
I am not a career politician. I do not belong to a political party. But I do believe that Corstorphine/Murrayfield needs a strong local champion, one unafraid to stand up to vested interests and speak out for everyone.
That is why I am standing for election. Can you help me get elected?
