Volunteer Driver Service - Food Emergency Delivery

Aim: To enable volunteer drivers to be paid 45p per mile for the food delivery journeys they undertake.

In 2020 (during Covid-19) Volunteer Driver Service (VDS) had our own stock of emergency food boxes that volunteer drivers delivered using their own vehicles. 

We also used to put out fresh fruit and veg for anyone to take.

Sometimes we would give away the emergency food boxes when we rotated our stock.

In May 2025 Volunteer Driver Service CIC agreed to work with Mike Hampton, BCAc to reinstate Local Larder (LL). Mike has found maintaining LL difficult combined with hurdles life invariably throws into the mix. This precarious, over two-year, balancing act came to an end March 2025. Mike's dream has always been to help people in crisis and Mike has been recognised at the highest levels for doing so. In order to keep helping people Mike has lent onto the relationship he already has with Volunteer Driver Service CIC (VDS). LL will still exist for funding and for food donations. LL will also donate any food products with less than 6 months best before date to other charity food outlets. The main change to relieve pressure from Mike will be operationally. LL will use VDS for public contact, 0300 3030 125. This will allow Mike to get a good chunk of his life back. VDS will speak with clients and arrange delivery of their food. The food will be supplied by LL. VDS will look at grant funding to support this partnering model. In the meantime, until grant funding is secured LL and VDS will be trying to raise £1000 to get us up and running operationally. LL will be fundraising for food and VDS for fuel. VDS would like to be able to offer our amazing volunteer drivers 45p per mile to cover fuel and wear and tear of their vehicles without asking LL to cover that cost themselves.
