The aim is to promote awareness of an innovative, free personal safety app named VigilAuntie, for women, girls, and vulnerable people.
Right to Resist (R2R) was formed in November 2022 to help vulnerable people protect themselves and each other from assault and harassment. Its aim is to offer its app technology free of charge in the form of a unique mobile phone personal safety app, which users can deploy if an incident occurs, and to partner with other charities and organisations who care for vulnerable people in different ways, to provide practical help and support to those who need it.
Our app is unique in that one of the main aims is to de-escalate incidents before they get out of control, as a preventative measure. It also provides a means for its app users to draw on the power of friendship to look out for each other, and to feel safer and more confident in the community by having the app, even when they are not using it.
Vulnerable people can be identified in groups including victims of domestic abuse, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ, women and girls and children, each with different challenges to face. However, anybody can encounter an incident at any time, so our services are free for all to use.
Our current focus is on the provision of an app for the safety of women and girls of all ages, named VigilAuntie. Developed under the guidance of Lord John Stevens, former Chief of both Northumbria Police and the Met, it draws on his experience of using video both as a deterrent and a means of gathering evidence, coupled with being an instant alert to friends & family. You can see how it works in a short explainer video on our site VigilAuntie.org.
Free to download from The App Store and Google Play, VigilAuntie was successfully launched in Newcastle in the autumn of 2025. Its approval rating was over 90% and over 70% of users said they felt safer just by having it.
The next stage is twofold: first, to increase awareness of the VigilAuntie app in the UK, both directly and through partnerships, and second to work with partners to publish and promote our app technology in other countries.
Having established the viability and need for the technology platform, Right to Resist has progressed from a start-up charity to the point where it can and will play an important part in empowering vulnerable people to protect themselves from assault and harassment, and in bringing perpetrators to justice.
