Provide shelter for vulnerable homeless people in London during the pandemic, and give them the support they need to rebuild their lives.
by C4WS Homeless Project in London, England, United Kingdom
On the 2nd March 2021 we'd raised £8,070 with 118 supporters in 76 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
Last year 320,000 people were recorded homeless in the UK. This is the equivalent of 36 new people becoming homeless everyday. The number of rough sleepers reported in February 2020 was 141% higher than in 2010. Reports of rough sleeping in the UK rose dramatically during the first lockdown. Alerts by members of the public regarding rough sleepers increased by 36% year on year between April and June 2020. With the current economic recession as a result of Covid-19, this rate is likely to increase.
Crucially, many homeless shelters are unable to open this year due to lack of money or being unable to provide a socially distanced setting.
Now the cold weather has set in, homeless people are becomingly increasingly vulnerable and isolated. They urgently need our help.
"C4WS has demonstrated empathy, kindness and constant efficiency in supporting their guests." - Leah, previous guest of C4WS
For 16 years C4WS has provided temporary accommodation for those experiencing homelessness in a night shelter scheme, and to give support to secure stable long-term housing and rebuild lives.
We have a wide range of year-round services to be able to provide a holistic support for our guests, as well as to address the root causes of becoming homeless. These include: Jobs Club, Home from Home (a hosting scheme), our Mentoring and Befriending scheme, Wellbeing Tuesdays, English classes and Stepping Stones (a work placement/volunteering project).
The cornerstone of what we do is to run our Winter Night Shelter. The shelter is a community-based project that previously operated across thirteen shelters that provided us with their space for free. It involves more than 800 volunteers. Last year we offered 2096 bed spaces and served more than 4000 meals to people from 27 different nationalities with a wide range of support needs.
91% of all guests that engaged with our services were moved into accommodation.

This coming winter, for the first time ever, C4WS will need to pay for its shelter venue. Due to COVID-19 risks our dormitory-style moving shelter is not possible - it is simply too dangerous for the guests, volunteers and staff involved. Our only option now is to shelter guests in self-contained accommodation. Crucially, this will ensure that each guest has their own room and shower, to keep them safe and help prevent the spread of the virus.
The team at C4WS has spent months searching for a suitable location to run a shelter from. A couple of weeks ago we were fortunate to find an empty hotel in King's Cross which fits our needs.
The shelter opened on Monday 14th December. It can house up to 20 people in self contained rooms and give them dignity, respect and a Covid-19 safe environment
Based on the costing of an empty London hotel that we are seeking to rent the entirety of, this will cost us around £105,000.
C4WS needs your support to help us to raise the funds to cover these substantial costs.
