Aim

Help Fund a Fifth Week at Uncovering Roman Carlisle

Our 2026 Uncovering Roman Carlisle excavation is fully funded for four weeks through project funding and Eventbrite participation fees. We’re raising £5,000 to cover all the costs of a fifth week -  giving us time to uncover more and involve more people.

Four weeks are already fully funded; this crowdfunder pays for the full cost of a fifth week of excavation.

Project description

Uncovering Roman Carlisle is a community archaeology project exploring the Roman history beneath the city. Professional archaeologists lead the excavation, with volunteers and local people taking part in digging, recording, and discovery.

The project is designed to be welcoming and hands-on, giving people the chance to connect directly with Carlisle’s Roman past while contributing to real archaeological research.

How the project is funded

The 2026 excavation is already fully funded for four weeks. These core costs - including professional staff, equipment, welfare, insurance, and site setup - are covered through a combination of project funding, partner support, and participation fees booked through Eventbrite.

This means the excavation is going ahead as planned.

Why we’re crowdfunding

This crowdfunder is about adding a fifth week.

Archaeology doesn’t always fit neatly into a timetable. Often, the most interesting features begin to emerge towards the end of an excavation. A fifth week gives us the time and flexibility to respond properly to what we’re finding, rather than having to stop just as the story is unfolding.

What the £5,000 pays for

The £5,000 target covers the full, real costs of one additional week of excavation, including professional archaeological supervision, equipment and consumables, welfare facilities, insurance, and keeping the site safe, inclusive, and well supported.

This funding pays for a complete, fully resourced fifth week on site.

Impact of a fifth week

A fifth week allows us to offer more volunteer places, spend proper time understanding newly uncovered archaeology, and ensure discoveries are carefully recorded and interpreted. It also strengthens what happens after the dig, with better-quality information feeding into talks, learning activities, and future exhibitions.
