Upottery desperately needs new play equipment for the play park. We want to replace the rotten old climbing frames in the park we all love!
Upottery Playing Fields are community-owned open spaces at the heart of our beautiful Devon village. The much loved but aged play equipment has reached the end of it's lifespan, and so we need to raise the funds to replace the climbing frames and bring the fun back to our lovely park!
As a small community Upottery receives very little in the way of funding for facilities from the county council. Despite that, we have a thriving sporting community, with tennis, cricket, football, short mat bowls, skittles, youth club and benchball clubs active throughout the year in the village. We are so lucky as a community to have two community sports and leisure sites, Glebe Park where the cricket, tennis and football clubs play, and the Old Playing Fields which encompasses the old cricket field, community orchard, multi-use games area and children’s play park.
The playing fields are governed and cared for by a group of unpaid volunteers, and all funds come from community fund-raising and any charitable grants we can apply for.
It is now beyond time for the facilities at the old playing fields, especially the children’s play equipment, to be replaced. We have sadly had to remove the large climbing frame as it had become unsafe. Upottery’s thriving primary school and preschool serve more than 120 children, and the play park is also used by visitors and the tourists who are so important to the economy of the area. During the recovery from the pandemic it was a vital venue for isolated young families to meet safely, and it has always been an essential part of the life of the younger part of our community.
In order to renovate the play park to the high standard needed for this level of use, we need to raise at least £45,000.
We will be undertaking multiple community fundraising events, as well as applying for grants to achieve this goal.
