Aim
We've been working hard to refurbish an old building and turning it in to a youth provision & warm place for our young people and community
Who are we?
The Unique Community Hub is based in Park ward, Halifax. Founded by teachers with lived experience of the issues faced by our community, our team at Unique Community Hub brings together a diversity of expertise, backgrounds and perspectives that contribute to our holistically inclusive and representative approach to community-building.
We are a not for profit-sports and social action youth provision. Our sessions are high impact with a strong focus on developing and nurturing young people into good citizens. We are a lead organisation as part of a cluster of grassroots groups and organisations where we work closely with the local College, Schools and local charities which have strong focus on youth rehabilitation, outreach and links with the community. By linking up we bring different segments of the community together and increase our outreach to the most vulnerable and affected young people to further connect with a shared philosophy and energy.
Community impact
Unique Community Hub is grounded in the simple value that everyone is welcome. Our inclusive and participatory approach to recreational programming aims to create a strong sense of cohesion across ethnic groups and generations. We do not have fees or require specific sports gear for participation, thus eroding material barriers to inclusivity. Target beneficiaries include some of Park Ward’s most at-risk and underserved populations, including teenage girls of Southeast Asian descent, teenage boys at risk of dropping out of school, and newly arrived refugees. In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, our beneficiaries have also expanded to include adults and the elderly equally interested in opportunities for team sports and group exercise. In creating a welcoming environment and encouraging broad participation, The Hub encourages a sense of shared community across a myriad of disparate populations.
Why are we crowdfunding?
The Hub aims to raise awareness and raise funds to provide and sustain a youth provision which will provide a much needed warm space, educational facilities and provide sports sessions for our community.
The Hub aims to address issues related to health, wellness and participation early on for our young participants - issues that can otherwise contribute to poor outcomes later in life. At the Hub, we have found that Southeast Asian girls are eager to participate in sports and exercise when given the opportunity; however, between limited opportunities for participation, the inaccessible price of gym memberships, and cultural norms, many forego participation. By providing a critical opportunity for engagement, The Hub hopes to meet these unmet demand, and further provide participants with the foundation for a healthy lifestyle they otherwise would lack.
How we’ll spend the money raised
The Funds raised and matched in this crowd funder will be spent on a strict 100% donation policy towards fulfilling the needs of our community project. Our Projects are largely volunteer run and our organisation is limited by guarantee, which means all money is spent back in to the community.
