Communications matter most when normal systems are under pressure

Mobile phones and internet services are central to everyday life. During disruption, at difficult locations or in temporary operations, those systems can be limited, congested or unavailable.

UK Resilient Communications Service (UKRCS) is a founding-stage volunteer project being developed to provide an additional layer of practical communications support for approved community organisations, charities, resilience partners, exercises and suitable public-benefit activities.

Our approach is technology-neutral. We want trained volunteers who can use the best lawful and appropriate option for the task: normal internet when it works, mobile networks where useful, appropriately licensed radio, satellite connectivity, temporary local networks, offline incident tools and resilient field power.

Our first objective: Unit 001

We are raising £10,000 to create the foundations of Unit 001.

The aim is not to buy equipment and immediately claim operational status. The aim is to establish governance, safeguarding, safety procedures, training, core equipment and controlled exercises so the capability can be tested honestly.

Success would mean:

- a core group of trained Communications Operators and Team Leaders;

- portable radio, networking and incident IT equipment;

- independent connectivity and resilient power options;

- documented communications, safety and information-handling procedures; and

- a practical exercise that identifies strengths, limitations and next steps.

Proposed use of the £10,000

- £2,800 — radio communications equipment

- £2,200 — field networking and incident IT

- £1,800 — resilient power and charging

- £1,200 — satellite connectivity and service costs

- £1,000 — training, exercises and safety equipment

- £600 — governance, insurance and administration

- £400 — contingency

This is a proposed allocation. Supplier prices, donated equipment and readiness priorities may change individual amounts. Material changes will be explained through campaign updates.

What different contributions can enable

- £10 can help with cables, labels or field consumables.

- £25 can help with charging, storage or safety accessories.

- £50 can contribute to a networking or operator-kit component.

- £100 can make a substantial contribution to a field equipment kit.

- £250 can provide major support towards core communications equipment.

These examples illustrate purchasing power. Donations will be pooled for the campaign purpose and will not be ring-fenced to an individual item.

Who is responsible?

UKRCS is currently an informal, founding-stage volunteer project. It is not presently a registered charity, Community Interest Company or company.

The Crowdfunder project will be organised by **[YOUR FULL NAME]**, who will be responsible for the receiving account and for applying funds to the Unit 001 founding purpose described here.

Donations are not eligible for Gift Aid. No rewards, operational priority or services are offered in return for a donation.

We will publish material campaign updates and a summary of expenditure so supporters can see how the project develops.
