Aim

Creating faith-centred spaces where Muslims can learn, talk about and access mental health support without shame.

It is more crucial than ever that we respond meaningfully to the mental health needs of Muslim communities.

Our landmark report, Muslim Mental Health Matters, produced by The Lantern Initiative, highlighted what many already feel but rarely see reflected in services: high levels of distress, significant stigma, and widespread dissatisfaction with mainstream provision. Many respondents reported that services felt culturally disconnected, spiritually absent, and at times unsafe. A substantial proportion delayed seeking help due to shame, fear of judgement, or concern about being misunderstood.

Research from the Mental Health Foundation has similarly identified that Western models of care are often experienced as culturally inappropriate for Asian/Muslim communities, with faith and spirituality rarely integrated into treatment. For Muslims, where faith is not peripheral but central to identity, this absence is profound.

Our report also echoed a wider body of evidence: racism, Islamophobia and social isolation significantly impact mental wellbeing. Experiences of discrimination are associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety and psychosis, alongside lower rates of help-seeking. Within many South Asian and Muslim families, mental illness remains heavily stigmatised and shrouded in silence. Conversations are avoided. Struggles are minimised. Shame fills the gaps.

At The Lantern Initiative, we see the consequences of this daily. Many of our service users come to us after exhausting mainstream pathways. They describe feeling unheard, unseen, or spiritually fragmented within systems that could not fully hold their identity. We exist to bridge that gap.

By creating platforms where mental health is discussed openly through a faith lens, we work to dispel misconceptions, reduce stigma and normalise help-seeking. We draw upon the protective factors within Islamic tradition — community, meaning, accountability, spiritual practice — not as an add-on, but as integral to healing.

Our vision is to strengthen the overall mental and emotional wellbeing of Muslim communities, empowering individuals to take ownership of their health in ways that align with both psychological evidence and spiritual grounding. We believe communities can become self-sustaining when equipped with culturally and spiritually congruent tools.

With the funds raised, we intend to:

1. Develop accessible self-help resources on Muslim mental health and Islamic psychology.

2. Deliver free workshops, training and drop-in sessions rooted in faith-informed practice.

3. Sustain and expand our coffee mornings for Muslim women, promoting connection, reflection and faith-centred self-care.

This work is not supplementary. It is essential.
