Aim

Two plus Two makes four is an exciting exhibition at The Auxiliary (Middlesbrough - May 2022) exploring mental health through creativity.

My name is Lizz Brady, I am an artist/curator from Manchester, UK, and founder of organisation Broken Grey Wires (BGW), responding to and exploring mental health conditions through art. I have curated exhibitions extensively within the UK and have exhibited my work internationally, including in; New York, Venice, Madrid, London and Glasgow. I create video installations, making use of live circumstances to develop interactive experiences for audiences.

I live with bipolar and anxiety disorder, and created BGW to push the boundaries for how we encounter and confront visual art.

In May 2022 (two years after the original scheduled date!) I take my organisation BGW up to Middlesbrough, to The Auxiliary Gallery.

I will be curating the third major BGW exhibition there, with artists such as Bill Viola, Pipilotti Rist, Gillian Wearing, Martin Creed and Daniel Johnston showing amazing work.

Alongside the exhibition there will be a night of live music - with bands TBC very soon!

And lots of community projects and workshops. Including zine making, printmaking, 3D model making, sound art making and more.

We will collaborate with local Teeside organisations to open up a conversation around mental illness and art.

There will also be research into developing a toolkit to use in the gallery for audiences who may feel overwhelmed/anxious. Throughout this process we will utilise the expertise of a leading psychotherapist for advice and tips.

So what do you get in return for supporting BGW??

As well as the excitement of helping make a huge project happen (!) we will offer rewards such as artist prints, disposable cameras showing unique moments of the curatorial process, opportunities to view the exhibition 'out of hours', postcards and badges.

If there are any questions you may have regarding the project, please get in touch with me :)
