This year, our community-based True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum is celebrating 35 years since its opening by holding a North End birthday party
Our museum was founded independently through the hard work of one local resident, Pat Midgley, in 1991. She fought for the preservation and public recognition of the last two historic fisherfolk cottages left following slum clearance in the 1930's and road widening schemes in the 1960's. The museum, which is run almost entirely through public donations and voluntarily support, continues to be a community hub, preserving and promoting the history of the lost fisherfolk community of King's Lynn through its extensive collections of artefacts, oral history interviews and primary historic sources.
In order to celebrate the hard work of all the volunteers over the years and to allow members of the community to reconnect to their heritage, we are hold a big birthday tea party on the 24th March for original members of the North End community with direct links to the fisherfolk community, followed by an open day for the general public on the 25th March. We're hoping to raise funds to work in collaboration with Fascinating Food, who run community-based catering projects, to create a wonderful tea party including some original recipes and foods from the past to create a very special day for the North Enders as well as for the wider community visiting on our open day. This provide a fun focus for people to get together, share memories and histories, and to encourage new people into the museum to join in.
We will also encouraging families in particular and will be organising the provision of 35th birthday badges to all the children who visit, so that in future, children wearing the badges will be able to enter the museum for free.
