Triumph over adversity: a book to capture my true story of a vibrant life, paralysed from the neck down.

My name is Sarah Barker. I’m 39 years old and I live in Bodmin, Cornwall, with my husband Rich, two dogs Marley and Darcey and my cat Sunflower. When I was 18 months old I had an accident which left me paralysed from the neck down. I’ve since lived on a ventilator and I have two support workers, 24 hours a day.

Some might see my disability as a barrier to living a good life. But I don’t. My journey has been colourful and eventful in so many ways, from being one of the first people to live on a ventilator at home, to turning the bay of my hospital ward into my own art studio (I paint by mouth) after my lung collapsed…three times.

People have told me time and time again that I inspire them and that I should write a book to share my life story. Writing a book is a dream of mine, too. And now I’ve decided that the time has come to pursue that dream and make this book a reality!

I am deeply passionate about advocating for disabled people and equal rights and I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to push boundaries, take risks and find joy. My book will capture this mindset and, I hope, inspire anyone who reads it – but especially those that have gone through similar adversities and spinal cord injuries.

Ultimately I want to share my story to show that being paralysed doesn’t mean that life is over. You can adapt and still live life to the full…but you’ve got to stay positive and determined and never, ever give up.

I am seeking to raise £20,000 in funds so that I can:

Hire and work closely with a writer in Cornwall who’s going to help me tell my story and write the book from scratch over a 10-12 month period

Produce and print the book. I am aiming to self-publish first of all, but may try to get it published in the future too.

Your donation will help me to spread positivity and determination amongst the disabled community and beyond. I am so thankful for any support you can give.
