We did it
On 10th March 2024 we successfully raised £1,223 ( + est. £209.50 Gift Aid ) with 38 supporters in 34 days

Taking on the River Thames for Type 1 diabetes, from Kent to the Cotswolds, by running marathons, trekking and cycling over 4 days

£1500 raised will be a boost for equipment and travel expenses of the DiAthlete team to support youth and parents with Type 1 diabetes in at least 4 game-based learning workshops during 2024

£3000 raised supports the workshops for youth + the venue hiring cost for our adult's wellbeing camp in summer 2024

£5000 raised provides DiAthlete with funding support to achieve 4 workshops for youth and caregivers, hire the venue for the adult's with type 1 camp & hire a venue for our end of year T1D Festival  which will aim to support Project Boda Boda by the Sonia Nabeta Foundation in Uganda & areas of our work in the UK moving into 2025.

THE CHALLENGE: 

Gavin Griffiths, founder of DiAthlete, has lived with Type 1 diabetes for 24 years. Once an active endurance athlete - completing 30 marathons in 30 days from John O'Groats to Land's End - he has not been active in challenges since 2018. In the #TrendsOnThames challenge, Gavin will return to ultra endurance to run, trek and cycle the distance of the River Thames in 4 days to try and help, with your kind support, DiAthlete's charitable projects for the Type 1 diabetes community in 2024. 

Schedule: 

Wednesday 28 Feb: Meet up at the Tudor Rose, Upnor, 6.30pm with Circle D

Thursday 29 Feb: Marathon Running, start point Slough Fort, Allhallows, Kent at 8am - finish point, Erith Pier (expected) 1.30 - 2.15pm - Meet up: Running Horses, Erith from 3pm.

Friday 1 March: Marathon Running > 8am start point, Crossness Incinerator (Thamesmead). Meet point: Parliament Square (est) 12pm. Finish point: Richmond Bridge (estimated 3pm, media stop in day)

Saturday 2 March: meet 8 - 8.30am, Richmond Bridge - trekking to Hampton Court, estimated arrival 11.45am. Lunch stop. Cycle 1pm: Hampton Court - Reading. 

Sunday 3 March: cycling, Reading (8am) - Oxford - Thames Head, Gloucestershire. (estimated) 4pm meet point Thames Head Pub, Cirencester

Diabetes insight: Gavin will be using multiple devices including blood glucose fingersticks to monitor the trends of his glucose data across each phase of activity throughout the 4 days, and keeping a live log. There will be social media Live sessions in evenings to share updates of progress and hurdles on the challenge. And (TBC) a few Face to Face opportunities too! Stay tuned, thanks for your support!
