Why Reconnecting Children with Nature is More Important Than Ever

In our fast-paced digital age, children are spending less and less time outdoors. As a result, they are missing out on vital experiences that foster a love for nature. 

Studies show that many kids can recognise more brand logos than native trees. This startling fact reflects how disconnected they’ve become from the natural environment. 

Trees are not just important for the planet—they support our well-being, provide food and medicine, and teach us valuable lessons about the interconnectedness of life. It’s essential that we educate future generations to understand, respect, and protect our trees.

About Children's Forest

Children’s Forest is a movement to support children to restore our environment as well as our relationship to nature through the planting and tending of forests. We take children through a Nature Connection journey to inspire a meaningful and long term relationship with the land. Over the years to come, the children return to tend the Children's Forests with their families and communities in support of a healthy world for the future generations.

What are you supporting?

Our aim is to plant 3 new Children’s Forests in the UK if we reach our target. This will support the wellbeing of children and their communities, as well as restoring forest ecosystems so needed at this time. We are launching our Tree Ogham Card Game as a Reward on this Crowdfunder, so that you can support children to plant trees, and in return you learn about trees through the ancient tree alphabet, foraging, ecology and games. 

What is the impact of your support?

Our tree planting projects support enhancement of biodiversity, carbon sequestration in light of Climate Change, as well as all the environmental benefits that trees provide. Restoring human connection to nature is vital in these times and informs the relationship and actions of generations to come to be in balance with the environment. Connecting to nature enhances wellbeing, cognitive function and physical health.

How is Children's Forest funded?

Children's Forest relies on grants and donations to do this important work with the children, for the earth. To create the Tree Ogham Card Game Deck, we were incredibly grateful to receive the time, expertise and generous support of:

The Tree Ogham Card Deck offers a range of engaging games, perfect in the Forest School setting as well as indoors. Classic options like Memory pairs and Top Trumps are included, with each card featuring a box at the bottom showing four numerical values. 

The deck also supports creative games like Treasure Hunt and Find a Tree, as well as movement-based activities that get children interacting with nature.

Accompanying the deck is a booklet filled with engaging games and informative content. It provides insights into the characteristics, medicines and benefits of each tree.

The cards and booklet come in a small box and bag, making it easy to take them outdoors and have them ready to learn and play wherever you go.

1. Can I order from outside of the UK?

Yes, we welcome international orders! Our professional fulfilment partner, Oak Tree Press, sends parcels all over the world. However, please be aware that depending on your country, you might be required to pay import taxes or VAT duties upon delivery.

2. When will I receive my rewards? 

We work with Oak Tree Press, our experienced fulfilment partner, to ensure your rewards are processed efficiently. We aim to hand over all packaged rewards to our courier service before Imbolc on 1 February 2025. Downloadable rewards (the Song Forest album of MP3s and the Tree Resource PDFs will be emailed before then). 

3. How big are the cards?

The Tree Ogham cards are standard poker deck size, measuring approximately 63 x 88 mm (2.5 x 3.5 inches). 

The cotton bag holds the cards and the booklet, ensuring they are easy to carry and use both indoors and outdoors.

4. What games can I play with the cards? 

The Tree Ogham Card Game Deck offers a variety of engaging games for different settings. You can play classic Memory pairs or Top Trumps, explore trees with a Treasure Hunt or Find a Tree game, and even enjoy movement-based activities.

5. How will the funds be used?

Your donation and the match funding from AVIVA Community Fund will be used to fund Children’s Forest tree planting, giving children hands-on experience with nature. The printing cost of the deck will also be covered by part of your pledge. 

6. What is the environmental impact of the printing process? 

We work with One Digital in East Sussex, an ISO 14001 certified company committed to reducing their environmental impact. They use soya-based inks, print on FSC® certified recycled paper, and safely dispose of waste. Their solar-powered facility reduces CO2 emissions, contributing to a greener planet.

7. Can I support the project without backing a reward?

Yes, you can support the project through donations without selecting a reward. Every contribution helps us reach our goal and make a positive impact on children and the environment.

8. How can I spread the word about this campaign?

Share our campaign on social media, through newsletters, and with friends and family. Your support in spreading the word is invaluable to helping us achieve our goals.

9. Why did my pledge not get matched by AVIVA Community Fund?

If you have donated before to Children's Forest via Crowdfunder in the last 12 months (more than one pledge in this campaign, or donated in Autumn 2023), AVIVA will only match the first pledge up to £250 per person.
