The GREEN Project, northern Tanzania, is a community tree planting initiative aiming to mitigate agricultural damage from droughts/flooding.
Hi there! My name's Jess and I'm a 26 year old environmental enthusiast. Having recently completed my masters in Environmental Management at Reading University, I'm fortunate enough to be embarking on a career in global land restoration. In January 2022, I will be travelling to Moshi, northern Tanzania for 3 months to work with the TATU Project, a social development charity working with the rural communities of Londoto and Mistu Wa Tembo. More specifically, I will be helping to coordinate the GREEN Project, which is a tree planting initiative aiming to mitigate the flood/drought damage which regularly affects agricultural productivity and local livelihoods.
TATU Project’s mission is to facilitate equal and sustainable development. By focusing on one community in two neighbouring villages, they are able to take time to build stable relationships with the community. They run a number of projects, including a health program, micro-lending schemes, and a clean water initiative. The GREEN Project, set up in 2020, is the newest addition to their work. Agricultural activity is the primary income source for the majority of the Londoto and Mistu Wa Tembo communities, however desertification, climate change, and frequent flood/drought events regularly damage crop production, leading to unpredictable income and reduced livelihoods. By improving the land quality through tree planting initiatives such as the GREEN Project, the structure and water holding capacity of the soils are increased, providing a defensive barrier to agricultural land, consequently improving agricultural production and the resulting incomes.

So what do I want from you?
Ahead of my placement I aiming to raise £300 to contribute to the GREEN Project. 100% of anything I raise will be donated to the TATU Project - specifically the GREEN Project as I am funding my own travel arrangements.
Thank you!
