Tobermory Fisherman's Pier Association maintains the pier in Tobermory for the use of commercial fishermen and the enjoyment of all.

Tobermory Fisherman's Pier Association

The Iconic Fishermen’s Pier, built in 1814 and attributed to the prolific builder/ designer Thomas Telford is in need of help.  The Pier forms the centrepiece of the town as it was finished not long after the town was built by the British Fisheries Society in 1788.

The town and pier were built for the then flourishing herring fishery but for a number of reasons Tobermory did not become a successful herring town.   However, over the years the Fisherman’s Pier, as it became known, has played its part in the success of the west coast fishing and some of the Town's greatest characters have worked and kept their boats here.

While the number of fishing boats working the pier has decreased in recent years this could all change as fishing from Tobermory has had its ups and downs.  If improvements can be made to make the pier more usable then this will hopefully attract a new generation of fishermen.  The Pier is also a major tourist attraction during the summer months and Tobermory would not be the same without it.

The Fishermen’s Pier Association is facing a number of immediate structural problems with the Pier and some longer term ones that require a proper survey and structural report as a starting point to what is likely to be some major remedial work.   There are opportunities as well to improve the pier and once again make this into a useful and important fishing centre for the Island.

The Association members are working with a number of organisations to seek funding for the initial remedial work and for a proper survey of the whole pier but particularly the outward end of the Pier which is showing worrying signs of movement.

All contributions are welcome, large or small.  The initial structural report is estimated to cost around £20,000 and the subsequent remedial work and improvements are estimated to be a six figure sum minimum.  Please help.
