Shortly after the death of his father, Frankie, a 19-year old grieving young man is visited by his Uncle Tommy, a big burly Irishman. Tommy delivers Frankie his father’s bequests, an old car and two briefcases, all Frankie’s father had to his name when he died. Along with this, Uncle Tommy explains to his nephew that due to the families financial situation, the only way to pay for a funeral is to sell the car. We follow Frankie as he must decide whether or not to sell one of the only things his father left to him, whilst also coming to terms with whats inside the briefcases.
‘To You I Leave’ is an intimate performance based drama that is rooted in realism, building a sense of tension as we wonder whether Frankie will sell the car and question what is in the briefcases. The film takes a subjective stance as we closely follow Frankie, as he manoeuvres through this moral dilemma and invites the audience to think about what they themselves would do in this situation.
Although the film explores some pensive and sombre themes, there is also a lot of warmth to be felt too, exploring the character of Frankie’s father when he was alive and the relationship between Frankie and his Uncle. The warmth will be felt both tonally and visually and although the film is set in the present day, there will be a subtle vintage feel to the film, showing how Frankie is living his life in the past, longing for a time when his father was alive. This can be seen in our cinematography mood boards:
It is vital to make sure that Frankie’s reality comes to life in a realistic, evoking and alluring way and our talented team will do their upmost to make sure Frankie’s world is created and is immersive for the audience. Take a look to see what they have planned:

Frankie:
Frankie is a 19-year-old student and this is his story. Frankie’s grief mixed with his age makes him unsure of himself. He feels the pressure of others fall onto his shoulders and sometimes stubbornly resists. There is still a little boy in Frankie, showing an innocence and naivety when faced with a decision that holds a heavy weight.
Uncle Tommy:
A big burly Irishman, Uncle Tommy visits his nephew to give him his younger brothers only possessions. Despite his huge size and shockingly bad language, Uncle Tommy is a kind and gentle man. Although he pushes strongly for Frankie to sell the car, he understands that it is ultimately Frankie’s choice, and not an easy one at that.
Frankie’s Dad:
We get to know Frankie’s Dad through short memories that belong to Frankie before he died. We come to learn that Frankie’s father, a tall and thin man unlike his brother, was an Irish, charismatic raconteur. Although seemingly indestructible, we can see that he’s troubled, a man secretly struggling with his mental health and a deteriorating relationship with alcohol.
Our writer, Ruben wrote this story with the inciting incident being based on the real life events of his father who was also left just two briefcases and a car when his father died. These objects are symbolic for the emotional inheritance that comes hand in hand with physical inheritance. Frankie was not left much, but does this affect the love his father had for him? The story aims to explore the difficulties of fatherhood and the way in which the relationships we have with someone during their life affect our relationship with them in their death. Grief is an intrinsically human state that affects so many of us and this film aims to show both the light and the dark within that state.
