Tipsy Sugar Flipping is our graduating 10 minute student short film, shooting in Cornwall in March 2023.
Three friends Maddie, Alex and Jem are regular partygoers. On one night out, fuelled by taking a concoction of illicit substances, three friends return home to keep the party going. What ensues is an intoxicated night of dancing, face painting and general revelry. But the night takes a dangerous turn, and one friend pushes her limits too far.
The title of the film Tipsy Sugar Flipping is slang for combining specific substances, that give a euphoric feeling. However, mixing them is incredibly dangerous, and the danger of doing so is unbeknown to many. With the film, we are attempting to educate and highlight these dangers of substance misuse and abuse.
Visually, Tipsy Sugar Flipping will highlight the stark difference between the colourful feeling of euphoria when intoxicated, and the reality of these dangers, grounding scenes with a realistic perspective. To get a better feel, here are our directors initial moodboards for these contrasting perspectives:

Amber: Director
Hi, I'm Amber and I am the writer and director of Tipsy Sugar Flipping. Although the film has very serious subject matter, it also has themes of female friendship which is important to me. I want the visual style of this film to feel unique, with different colour palettes running throughout to combine the happy, warm and intimate moments between the characters, with the raw, gritty reality that cuts through the narrative.
Nestka: Producer
Hi, I’m Nestka and I am producing Tipsy Sugar Flipping. I have worked on visually driven short films before and am excited to be working on another. For me, the challenge of this film is working with the two oppositional aesthetics and understanding the themes and getting the message across with clarity for viewers. Done right, I feel this will be incredibly powerful and unique. Working with a talented crew and contributors, I am confident we will create a meaningful film.
Lily: Director of Photography
I’m Lily the Director of Photography and I’m super excited to be able to work with different camera and lighting techniques that enhance both the physical and emotional experiences of the characters throughout the film and all the different creative possibilities. Inspired by the directors moodboards and references, I think we can make a unique, emotive, and relevant film.
Lottie: Production Designer
I’m Lottie, the production designer of the film. What excites me about this project is exploring the journey of these characters and visualising their world whilst they’re under the influence. It will be fun to build the characters of these young women through costume, makeup and props. I am excited for the challenge of using these elements to emphasize the difference between the characters.
Mia: Editor
Hi I’m Mia, I will be editing this film and I am so excited to help tell this story. Furthermore, I am looking forward to the creative challenge ahead concerning the emotion of the film and how I can amplify this in the edit. Plus, I’m so thrilled to be working with Amber and to help her creative vision be put forward though the editing.
Michael: Sound Designer
Hi! My name is Michael Lewis and I shall be the sound designer for this short film! I’m very excited to work on Tipsy Sugar Flipping and make it sound truly amazing! I’m very lucky to be working with such an amazing crew! I shall be looking forward to showing off my skills!
