Our elderly group is going to climb the Three National Peaks within 7 days to raise money for local mountain rescue and community projects.
Upper Eden u3a is based in Kirkby Stephen on the famous Coast to Coast national trail. Thousands of walkers follow the C2C every year, and almost all pass through our small town.
We have a local Mountain Rescue Team who are all volunteers doing amazing work in the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. They turn out in all weathers at all times of the day or night, averaging 30 call-outs a year. They have to cover the costs of training, equipment, deployment, heating and lighting for the base, maintenance of vehicles etc. This all has to be funded through public appeal and donations.
Upper Eden u3a also supports the community in the area. Current projects include dry stone walling repairs, support for the local heritage railway, a prostate awareness and advice group (the Donut Club) and another dozen interest groups. At the moment, the cost of all of these is coming directly from our members.
Our target is not large but will have a disproportionate impact in this very rural area. We are aiming for £1000 for the MRT and £200 for local groups. The walking team is covering all their own costs, and all proceeds will be directed as above.
The team comprises four individuals, the oldest being 75. We are all keen walkers and between us have experience of the Three National Peaks. Doing all three climbs in a week is going to be ....testing.. In my own case, in 1961 my father promised me that we would climb Ben Nevis if I passed my 11+. I did, but we never got round to the climb, so this is a rather delayed prize.
