New stretch target
The art centre and community cinema is run by Portsmouth Film Society CIC and is offering: a venue for flexible screenings which can be configured to meet specific event needs and can be offered as a venue for hire.
We run the cinema, educational programme, small art exhibition and activities with direction from the Southsea Community Cinema and Art Centre. As well as a venue, it will be available for hire, presentation room, seminars and meetings for local businesses, and use for a multi-purpose.
In addition we provide employment and volunteering opportunities, training for various facets of cinema production, event management and business and wellbeing courses.
Family focussed programming with educational film screenings with INTO films. This give opportunities for youth groups to come along and be involved with various art activities and workshops.
We have used money raised so far to refurbish 1-3 Palmerston Rd, the equipment installation, sound proof walls, build a Disabled WC it will be a Covid-19 safe environment, new website, equipment, train our staff and volunteers.
We need more money to complete the job.

Portsmouth Film Society (PFS) is a unique organisation in Portsmouth.
It is a non-profit making company whose work is carried out by over 40 volunteers several of whom have professional experience working in film industry; ten nationalities from three continents make up our committee and volunteer groups including students from our local university
Our mission is to use film and film-making as a catalyst for social and cultural exchange, thereby raising awareness of issues affecting Portsmouth and influencing community cohesion to help make the city a better place to live.
Working in conjunction with partners and sponsors, PFS offers mostly non-mainstream films in a traditional cinema setting.
These are sometimes complemented by guest speaker panels (comprised of either filmmakers or topical experts), quiz nights, complimentary social programs, Q&A sessions, talks and courses. These are all techniques aiming to encourage audience discussion around the issues facing people in Portsmouth’s multi-cultural, metropolitan area.
We aim to:
- encourage exhibition of films of artistic, cultural or informative character.
- advance the education of public knowledge, understanding and appreciation of film.
- bring people together for shared experiences. our aim is to bring together different cultures and breaking down social barriers.
- celebrate the diversity in the community and show films for BAME. groups in the community.
- One of our activities is our highly successful, well-attended and long-running outdoor Summer Sunset Screenings within the city including drive-ins

We have been wanting to establish such a venue in our local area.
We do not have local cinema in Southsea, Portsmouth and we see this a great opportunity in Southsea to tap into a prosperous and youth-orientated environment by working with other community and education groups that are open to innovation. Focus on under-represented diverse groups in Southsea and Portsmouth in general and give them opportunity to express their culture and share with our audience by working with them to provide culturally-interesting and sensitive films.
Our membership data shows that most of the film attendees are based in the PO4 and PO5 areas and this gave us the impetus and encouragement to start a cinema for all.
Our Operational Strategy:
1- Raise Awareness of Social Issues by Showing Indoor Films & Conducting Film-making Workshops
2 - Bring Cinema into the Community by Showing Films Outdoors
3 - Operate a film-based culturally diverse, cinema focused local community centre.
4- Be a hub for local artists and an exhibition hall to celebrate the city's culture

For local businesses who wish to support our community aims and objectives. That includes our educational activities, festivals and local artists exhibitions. We will show the supporters logos at the being of the screenings and we will mention their support on social media/our website and any press-release. We will give free group tickets (max 10) for their staff.

For large local businesses and educational institutions.
Their logos will show before our main screenings and on our website, their support will be mentioned at any press-releases.
They will also have complimentary tickets, offers, invitations for to the mini-galas and free drinks/snacks at certain events. You can also have 2 free private screenings for your staff or team.

Free membership for a year
Annual membership will allow you to watch one film per a week at our Southsea Community Cinema.
