Aim
To open a board game shop and community focused cafe in the middle of St Davids, Pembrokeshire.
I have wanted to set up The Smörgåsboard in St Davids for a few years, and when I heard that the TYF shop was closing, I thought my business would be the perfect fit for the space.
What is The Smörgåsboard?
Quite simply, The Smörgåsboard is a buffet of board games in a welcoming space that everyone instantly feels at home. The Smörgåsboard will be open to everyone. Hardcore board gamers will have the range of games they love, families will be able to pick up their retro favourites, and you’re never too old to start playing new games. We want the business to open all year round to provide quality year-round employment and a space for locals in the quieter, leaner months of the year. We want to subsidise our winter opening with the summer trade, to ensure that we can give back to our community.
We will even offer specific calm times for gamers with additional learning needs, or those in our community who like things that little bit calmer. And we'll encourage solo gamers to join events (or just turn up), knowing that you'll always have a friendly welcome and time from our staff.
What next?
Well, I am delighted that we have successfully bid for a lease of 1 High Street, St Davids. However, it's not signed, yet! I am currently in the process of applying for funding for the project and that's where this crowdfunder comes in.
I am applying for a standard business loan to cover the setup costs, however it will help convince the bank to lend me the money by showing them the level of support for an independent business on St Davids High Street. By supporting the crowdfunder, you will will be pledging your support to this business and everything that it stands for.
What are the risks?
The risks are minimal. If I don't get the business loan, I won't sign the lease for 1 High Street, and I won't therefore claim any money from the crowdfunder. If the loan is successful, your contribution will go towards my startup costs, to ensure that the business is as awesome and vibrant as it can be and you can then make the most of your reward (if you've purchased one).
