A student-made short film exploring drug use, London's squat rave scene, and the impact of adolescence and COVID 19.
Hi, I’m Sophie Martin-Birsim. A filmmaker, storyteller, and proud London Screen Academy alumni. As a disabled female filmmaker, my journey into film hasn’t always followed a traditional path, but that’s exactly what fuels my voice: raw, real, and unafraid to explore the flawed parts of being human.
The Other Night is more than just a short film. It’s a deeply personal project rooted in my experiences and the world I’ve observed as a teenager. This film is a love letter to friendship, self-destruction, and survival in such a huge scary city.
This story matters to me because it speaks to the chaos that simmers beneath the surface of youth , especially for those of us searching for connection in the wrong places. It explores teenage trauma, the lure of escapism vs self-destruction, youth culture within London, and death and desensitisation to violence and drugs.
These themes I’ve lived through and seen around me. As someone who’s often felt like an outsider in both the industry and the world, I want to create something that holds space for the people who don’t usually get seen or heard or for trauma and experience that was never talked about during the pandemic era.
Thank you so much to everyone who donated, shared, and supported this film during production. Your belief and generosity are the only reason this project exists. What started as a very personal idea was able to grow into a full film because of the community that stood behind it. The response during filming was something I never expected. The amount of recognition and encouragement this film received throughout production reminded me why I wanted to tell this story in the first place. Watching people connect with it before it was even finished has been incredibly emotional and has shown me just how much potential this film holds. With your help, we managed to film over the course of 6 days, with a cast and crew of over 60 people, and create something we are so proud of.
Since wrapping, we are now in our post-production stage, editing, and creating our final product. We are now trying to take the final step and give this film the future it deserves. The next stage is sharing it with the world through film festivals and promotion. These funds will go directly toward film festival submission fees, promotional materials such as posters and press assets, screenings, and travel costs that allow us to attend festivals in the UK and abroad. Being present at these festivals gives the film real opportunities to be seen, discussed, and supported in ways that simply are not possible otherwise. This film has already gone further than we ever imagined, and we truly believe it still has so much more room to grow. With your help, we can give it the chance to reach audiences in places we never thought this story would travel. If you are able to donate or even just share this page, please know how deeply grateful we are. Thank you for believing in this film and for helping carry it forward.
Thank you,
Sofia Martin-Birsim
