Aim

Help fund an independent ecology report to protect Site 2 of The Greens in West Saltdean, Brighton, from housing development.

Help Us Protect Site 2 of The Greens in West Saltdean

A planning application has been submitted to build three houses on Site 2 of The Greens in West Saltdean.

This land is not ordinary development land. It is a historic green space that has served the local community for more than 80 years. It is protected as a Local Green Space in the West Saltdean Neighbourhood Plan and forms part of the original Mount Estate green spaces.

Local residents have cared for and maintained the green for many years. It is home to birds, insects, foxes, reptiles, and badgers. Volunteers have also been working to improve biodiversity through sensitive management and native planting.

The developer’s application argues that the land is overgrown, inaccessible, and in need of development-led restoration. We strongly disagree. Residents know this green is valued, maintained, and capable of being improved without building houses on it.

Why We Need an Ecology Report

The applicant has submitted its own ecology report, but we do not believe it properly reflects the current condition or ecological value of the site.

Importantly, the applicant’s own report identifies the need for further surveys, including reptile surveys and breeding bird surveys. Residents have also identified possible badger activity that needs proper investigation.

We need an independent ecology report so that the Council has proper evidence before making any decision.

What the Money Will Pay For

The funds raised will pay for an independent ecologist to survey the site and produce a report for submission to Brighton & Hove City Council before the planning deadline.

The report will help assess:

  • The current ecological value of the site
  • Wildlife habitats on the land
  • Possible protected species issues
  • The need for further surveys
  • Whether the applicant’s ecology evidence is adequate
  • How the site can be improved without residential development

The cost of the ecology work is expected to be £2,046, including VAT, with possible additional costs if the ecologist is needed to attend planning meetings or provide further advice.

Why This Matters

If planning permission is granted on this Local Green Space, it could set a damaging precedent for other protected green spaces in West Saltdean.

This campaign is about more than one piece of land. It is about protecting the green spaces that make Saltdean special, preserving wildlife habitat, and standing up for a community space that residents have valued for generations.

We are grateful for the support of the Saltdean Residents Association, which has kindly agreed to endorse and help promote this crowdfunder.

Any donation, large or small, will help us put forward the strongest possible evidence before the planning deadline.

Thank you for supporting the campaign to protect Site 2 of The Greens.
