We're still collecting donations
On the 1st December 2020 we'd raised £12,989 with 119 supporters in 197 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

Each month that we are closed costs us £5000. With the lockdown continuing and no hopes of reopening as a venue until September or later, we have decided to reopen the crowdfunder to help us continue through this period. Any support is greatly appreciated.
The George Tavern is part of a national initiative launched by Music Venue Trust to prevent the closure of hundreds of independent music venues.
The George has been a staple of the East London community since the first building in 1623. In 2004 our landlady Pauline took over the Free House and offered it to the arts community, helping The George grow into a pillar of the DIY music scene. The stage offers a platform to London artists and is proud to host upcoming alternative acts most days of the week. This combination of historical legacy and contemporary cultural involvement makes The George Tavern a unique figure in London nightlife.
Why we need help.
Our landlady Pauline is facing bills of £5000 per month to pay for the fixed costs on the building, and it’s likely that we’ll be closed for at least 2 months. This means that we could be expected to make £10,000 in payments that we can't cover alone.
Frustratingly there seems to be an industry wide block on all insurance claims, meaning that venues have been paying in but the companies aren’t paying out to help them survive the extended closure. We’ve been lucky to stay open through some tough obstructions thanks to The George Tavern community, and now we’re all facing another challenge.
Our venue faces closure because without the engagement of our community, we can’t pay the bills alone.
If some of the money you would usually spend at The George on entry, drinks, or a night out is going spare, any support that our patrons could offer would really help us keep going during this time where we simply have no earnings to pay the expenses.
If we can raise more than what we need to cover the rent and the bills, we’ll use the money to fund some essential work that needs doing on the building before we can reopen.
If we hit our target, and we can prevent the closure of our venue, everything above the amount we need will be donated to the Music Venue Trust GMV Crisis Fund to protect other venues just like ours, right across the country.
Thank you for your ongoing support - Once safe, we can’t wait for you to fill this community driven venue and garden again soon.
