Aim: ‘The Windmill’ (2024) is a documentary that will detail the creative growth of bands emerging from Brixton’s Punk Rock and Alternative Scene
‘The Windmill’ (2024) is a documentary that will detail the creative growth of bands emerging from Brixton’s Windmill venue; the birthplace for major innovative bands and artists in recent years and explore the local scene surrounding it.
We will interview musicians involved within the scene along with key members of the culture including fans and music crew members, and those around them, exploring how and why Brexit, the Pandemic and surrounding issues have affected their music. The film’s centrepiece will be a live performance, capturing the music and energy of the scene
Inspired by films like "London - The Modern Babylon"(2012), "Dance Craze" (1981) and Black Country, New Road's concert film "Live At Bush Hall" (2023) we are planning to illuminate the inner workings of the modern music scene and illuminating the people who make it happen.
We are living in a period of great artistic change and this is largely why we need to see this film to actualisation. As young artists we wish to explore this new creative environment and seek to understand why artists feel the need to respond to the events in such an unorthodox way
We also hope to inspire audiences as we are living through an incredibly exciting time in regards to art and this is the type of landscape that we, young creatives, will be going into the next couple years.
If you have the means to donate, you will be actively helping in achieving our dream documentary and doing both the venue and the bands associated with it justice. Film making is expensive and due to the fact we are filming in London, we also need to be able to pay for crew accommodation and food. Funds will also be used to pay contributors and make sure everyone is fairly compensated for their time and effort.
We appreciate that not everyone can donate to this project at this time but you can still be involved But every share, follow, and comment helps – especially of this page and our Instagram. It is also a wonderful way to keep updated with the project and see what is happening behind the scenes.
We are hugely grateful for your support – however much it may be.
So, where is all the money going? Below is a pie chart detailing each department and their chunk of the costs, showing you that each penny is accounted for.
Hello, I'm Fin! Music and storytelling has always been deeply important to me, and remains one of the main ways in which I creatively express my views and perspectives on the world. When I was 13 years old, I fell in love with the music of Nirvana, and that gave me a passion for Punk Rock music ever since, and it is a love I continue to hold for the raw music emerging from the Brixton's Post- Brexit Scene. Music and creative perspectives are changing, along with the world around us, and I wish to capture a story that will inspire and inform audiences, and hopefully young filmmakers like myself.
Hi! I’m Liddy and I’m the Producer of “The Windmill”. Growing up Music and Film were both my biggest loves and I have always been very passionate about working on projects that allow them to interact, The Windmill was the perfect project for this. I believe this film needs to be made as in a post covid and post Brexit world, creativity within music communities has been at a peak and I want to highlight the wonderful work that’s coming out of these outlets. I’m a huge believer in supporting live music and go to concerts regularly, with my favourite artists being people like Boygenius, Wallows and Bon Iver.
Hello my name is Wilf. I’m so thrilled to be part of this film, which allows me to have the opportunity to explore and document a sprawling and inspiring music scene. Like all our crew I am an avid music fan, especially electronic and ambient genres. My passion is for filmmaking and documenting, telling real stories through cinematography. I’ve been glued to a camera all my life and am over the moon to be given the opportunity to visually document something else I am deeply interested in: music. For this project I am looking forward to experimenting with different formats to achieve a diverse and colourful music scene. I can’t wait to get stuck in and become closer to everyone and everything in and around The Windmill!
Hey, I'm Alfie! I am the Editor for 'The Windmill'. For as long as I can remember music has been a huge and important part of my life. It has been a great tool to help me escape and express myself creatively. When I was a kid, my Dad, without fail, would always put on Guns 'n' Roses on the car stereo and blast November Rain. I think that's the origin for my love of hard rock. It took over my brain and gave me so much energy. The emotions of those songs helped me open up. The Windmill is a film that explores the passion and meaning of music to many people, through the music venue, to the people, for the people. With fast paced editing and with a unique style, we will immerse audiences in the world of The Windmill and really understand why this pub and the music it attracts, means so much to people. In post COVID and Brexit era, the indie music scene has never been bigger and it's up to us to ride this wave.
