Aim

We are setting up a mobile sensory room to help autistic people and others with sensory needs across Devon

Where did this project come from?

The Wandering Sanctuary was conceived by Freya, based on her own experience of the challenges of navigating autistic burnout, her love of sensory rooms, and her desire to build her life back up after 3 years in hospital.

When she was discharged from hospital earlier this year, it became clear that accessing dedicated sensory support spaces in rural Devon involves massive barriers, fraught with exhausting travel times, high costs, and severe sensory overload before families even arrive at a static facility.

What's the core idea?

Instead of forcing neurodiverse and sensory-sensitive individuals to travel miles for a moment of peace, we decided to put that peace on wheels. We are custom-engineering a deeply calming multi-sensory environment inside a towable trailer.

By bringing an oasis of interactive walls, calming fiber optics, and gentle environmental controls directly to school gates, village greens, and community hubs, we are breaking down isolation and making true sensory inclusion completely accessible.

What are we using the money for?

By supporting this fund raiser, you will be helping us to get the Wandering Sanctuary on the road. Literally.  We have raised £8,000 from an initial crowd funding round, and are now seeking to raise another £20,000 to be able to get the mobile sensory room on the road and being used by autistic people and others with sensory needs across Devon.

The £8,000 we have already raised is going to be used to buy a trailer and refurbish it ready for the sensory kit.  The £20,000 we are now looking to raise will pay for the sensory kit and its installation, and insurance, training etc. we need to be able to start using it.

Our goal is to get the mobile sensory room up and running as quickly as possible, so we'll be making use of the money we raise to move the project along as we raise it.  We know there are plenty of people across Devon who will benefit from the Wandering Sanctuary, and Freya is keen to bring it to life as part of her own ongoing work to increase her resilience, improve her mental health and build a life for herself beyond her current struggles.
