To help us lease the Twilight Cabin as a respite haven for children and adult patients so they may get a break from ongoing treatments.
The Twilight Cabin
The Twilight Cabin was set up in January 2014 for children or adults diagnosed with a variant of Vasculitis and provides free respite holiday accommodation for the patient and their family. Vasculitis is an autoimmune disease that activates the body's immune system to attack its own blood vessels causing significant and irreparable damage to major organs. Vasculitis affects children and adults and has no cure. It is fatal if left undiagnosed and when diagnosed can be maintained using immune suppressant treatments (similar to chemotherapy medication) on an ongoing basis. The disease is devastating and debilitating and the Twilight Cabin seeks to offer patients the opportunity to get a break away from hospitals, treatments and reduce stress and anxiety. The cabin is located in a secluded and remote area on the banks of Loch Awe in the Scottish Highlands. The cabin and its location provides a change of scenery and a relaxing holiday. The cabin is currently fully reserved for patients and in use all year round. It aims to offer support for around 60 patients per annum and their families in this comfortable three bedroom cabin.
The Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation
The Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation is a registered charity (SC041934) in Scotland The charity supports Vasculitis throughout the UK by funding research at the University of Aberdeen, awareness media campaigns and patient support services within the UK. The charity receives no government or trust funding - all services are funded from charity donations and events organised by the charity. The Twilight Cabin is a respite facility and the charity funds each and every patient stay in addition to the cabin lease payments, insurance, maintenance and ongoing guest cleaning. The Crowdfunding project aims to raise the lease payments that we need to support the charity cabin and its very existence. Our lease payments each year are £7,500 and at the end of the lease we are seeking to purchase the Twilight Cabin in addition to establishing similar facilities in other UK locations. The cabin has been leased to allow the charity to raise the funding for the lease and purchase over four years so it does not affect the funds raised for research, awareness and patient support.
Background to Charity
The Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation was established in October 2010 when Lauren Currie, aged 15, lost her battle to Vasculitis at Crosshouse Hospital. The charity was founded by her parents in her memory to help and support children and adults diagnosed with the disease. Lauren was not diagnosed or treated for the disease due to poor awareness. She died when the disease attacked the blood vessels in her lungs causing fatal haemorrhaging. Lauren fought the disease bravely and inspires the charity every day to deliver the best of care and support for any family or patient affected with the disease. Lauren loved the Twilight Saga books and films and her charity has embodied the Twilight name in her charity and the cabin in her memory.
