Who Are Beach Guardian?
Beach Guardian is a social enterprise co-founded in 2016 by father-daughter duo Rob and marine biologist Emily Stevenson. Through beach cleaning, art workshops and working within the community, they aim to "Engage, Educate and Empower Against Plastic Pollution".
Over the years, Beach Guardian and their team of volunteers have cleaned tonnes of plastic waste off Cornish beaches. From huge nets and tangles of rope, to crisp packets discarded decades ago. Their regular beach cleans offer a practical and accessible way to do something about the issue of plastic pollution, but, also, so much more; a connection to nature, a sense of community and kinship, benefits to mental health, and a very exciting treasure hunt!
With so much waste collected, and more and more washing up each day, there is sadly still some way to go in tackling the issue of plastic pollution.
What’s The Project?
The Tales Of Cetus is the story of those trying to turn the tide on plastic pollution. It’s a project that connects people with the issue, but also with the knowledge that what we do does make a difference and, together, we can make a change.
In the Autumn of 2020, in between periods of severe isolation and lockdowns, a community of Beach Guardian volunteers, local residents, charity groups, schools and colleges joined together to be a part of a very exciting project.
Over the course of three weeks, a huge pile of rope, nets and ghost fishing gear was transformed from waste into a monument with a message, weaving together the spirit of all of those involved into Cetus.
Since then, the workshops and following projects have evolved and continued to bring more and more people together and spread Cetus’ message further, including at the G7 in St Ives, Cornwall, and COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland.
The film follows this inspiring journey, and shows the impact of Cetus as a monument to making a difference and coming together to tackle plastic pollution.
Who Is Cetus?
Thanks to artists Andrew Whittle and Grace Emily Manning, Beach Guardian volunteers and the local community, Cetus, an 8m long sculpture of a humpback whale, was created from nets, ropes and ghost fishing gear collected off of Cornish beaches.
In this documentary, she tells a tale of pain; ashamed of the harmful materials she is made from.
She tells a tale of anger; disappointed by humans and our impact on the planet.
She tells a tale of uncertainty; the need for change but not knowing what to do.
Her most important tale, however, is one of awakening, hope and the power of people coming together in the knowledge that we can make a difference.
Your Support!
This Crowdfunder will support the completion of the documentary, enable a series of screenings and panel talks, and help to continue Beach Guardian's work of developing and providing educational resources, workshops and community activities including beach cleaning.
We aim to present the finished film with panel talks to inspire and empower people in their communities.
For your support (tier dependant due to seating limits), you are invited to the film premiere in February with the chance to hear from those involved in the story and making of the film, Beach Guardian volunteers and other audience members, and enjoy a very inspiring evening!
