How an honest GP was targeted and trolled and almost destroyed, all because he stuck to his oath to protect his patients from harm

Destruction Of An Honest Doctor: The Story Of Dr. David Cartland

Dr. David Cartland’s patients trusted him without question: a fully trained GP with a First-Class Honours degree in Biomedical Science (including specialist immunology, microbiology and virology training), years of experience across primary care, A&E, urgent care and teaching, and a previously exemplary record with no history of patient harm, clinical negligence or safeguarding concerns. He took the Hippocratic Oath seriously - primum non nocere, first do no harm - and when he began seeing what he believed were serious injuries in his patients during the Covid-19 vaccine rollout, especially as it extended to pregnant women and children, he acted on that duty.

As journalist Jacqui Deevoy documented in her Substack piece “Dr. David Cartland Never Harmed A Patient: His Life Was Ripped Apart Anyway” and in interviews with him, the consequences were devastating and, in her assessment, no longer primarily about medicine. They were about making an example of a doctor who refused to clap along with the official narrative. Cartland resigned from his vaccinating practice after growing concerns, explained his decision publicly, and continued to speak out. What followed was a cascade of professional and personal destruction: hundreds of GMC complaints, a tribunal that found him guilty of harassment of colleagues and of dishonesty in connection with offering exemption-related letters, and erasure from the medical register in June 2025. Critically, as Deevoy reported from their conversation, no patient was harmed, no notes were altered, and the “exemption certificates” he discussed were framed by him as statements of bodily autonomy rather than fabricated medical documents - the GMC side could not produce the actual papers in question when pressed for details.

The punishments went far beyond the medical register. On Halloween night, he answered a knock thinking it was trick-or-treaters; it was the Disclosure and Barring Service. He was later barred for life from working with children and vulnerable adults. The reasoning, as he recounted to Deevoy, hinged on his willingness to prioritise his own judgement over “international policy” in a pandemic - raising the speculative possibility that he might one day overrule a safeguarding rule. There were no children involved in the GMC case, no historic safeguarding issues in his medical career, private life or football refereeing, and he is the father of four children of his own. The barred listing alone damages reputation by association. The Football Association then barred him from refereeing (a passion and outlet in which he had refereed dozens of matches and progressed quickly) and even restricted aspects of spectating or involvement around youth games, despite adult open-age football not being a regulated activity in the same way and youth games always involving coaches, parents, and others present. Appeals failed.

Deevoy’s reporting also details the relentless online and offline campaign against him: seemingly coordinated trolling that followed him into real life (involving neighbours, children’s services, and more), local media hit pieces, and a pattern in which he faced police interviews under caution while those targeting him did not. The human cost has been severe - impact on his family, mental health struggles including depression, insomnia and anxiety and tens of thousands of pounds already spent on appeals and defence, with far more needed for a full fight. Open letters from groups including UKMFA, HART, Doctors for Patients UK, and others, signed by dozens of doctors and health professionals, have expressed shock at the DBS action and argued that raising vaccine safety concerns and upholding informed consent does not constitute a safeguarding issue. HART’s own analysis described the process in terms of a “kangaroo court” that failed to properly consider context, his own evidence of harassment against him, and the absence of patient harm.

Yet Cartland continues. He has written the book Do No Harm: The Diaries of a ‘Vaccinated’ Anti-Vaxxer, documenting his journey from frontline GP (who himself received the vaccines early on) to whistleblower. He offers health coaching and advisory services drawing on his training and experience. He still speaks about the patients he saw, the patterns he observed and the importance of open discussion rather than enforced conformity. As Deevoy noted after interviewing him, the system can take the job, the hobby and the title, but it has not silenced him - and that appears to be what frustrates his critics most. David’s friends, family and followers believe he will be vindicated.

This film focuses on the injustices Dr. Cartland has suffered and captures a vital human story of principle, family cost, institutional pressure and resilience. It examines how a doctor with a clean clinical record was erased, barred and restricted, not for harming patients but for questioning policy and engaging in online exchanges amid what he and his supporters describe as reciprocal harassment. In an era when trust in medicine has been severely damaged for many, Cartland’s case stands as a cautionary tale about what happens to those who prioritise observed patient outcomes and informed consent over institutional consensus.

Support for this crowdfunder would help tell that story with the depth, interviews, and evidence it deserves - giving a platform to the doctor who never harmed a patient yet lost so much, and to the broader questions of medical ethics, free inquiry and accountability that his personal experience raises.

Dr. David Cartland remains, in the eyes of those who have followed his case closely, a man of conscience who paid an extraordinary price for doing what he believed was right.
