Project Proposal: Fostering Community Resilience through Climate Action

Introduction:

Mafia Weekend CIC is a youth-led Not-for-profit dedicated to fostering community resilience and rebuilding England's relationship with the land through collective story making.

We are raising £10,000 to advance our mission of nurturing resilience and collective action amidst the challenges of climate change. Through innovative initiatives rooted in grassroots mobilisation, storytelling, and nature-based experiences, we aim to participants across the South of England, focusing our main projects in Bristol.

Background and Rationale:

In the face of the urgent climate crisis, the need for immediate and concerted action at all levels of society is paramount. However, conventional approaches have often fallen short, failing to match the scale and pace of the challenge. At Mafia Weekend CIC, we believe in the power of community-led initiatives as crucial elements of effective climate solutions. Inspired by recent research advocating for bottom-up approaches, our project seeks to harness the strength of local networks to translate global concerns into tangible actions that resonate deeply with diverse communities and drive impactful change from the ground up.

Objectives:

  • Engage with community members being systemically marginalised and underserved with a focus on Black, Indigenous and people of colour, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer community and citizens that are on low income.
  • Create transformative storytelling and nature-based activities that foster community cohesion and environmental stewardships.
  • Create inclusive dialogue, creativity, and collaboration spaces that strengthen networks, inspire innovation, and amplify collective voices.

Proposed Activities:

Story Gathering Events: We will create events in collaboration with esteemed partners such as the Association for Sustainable Practitioners. These gatherings will provide a platform for participants to delve into their relationship with nature, sharing tales of resilience and adaptation. Each event will be a vibrant celebration featuring collective story-making sessions, live music, wholesome organic fare, film screenings, and engaging workshops. Through these immersive experiences, attendees will cultivate a profound sense of belonging and empowerment, igniting their passion for climate action.

Total Cost: £2250

Tune-In, Co-create with Earth Sessions: Our nature-based sessions will invite young people to embark on transformative journeys of self-discovery and environmental connection. Held amidst the splendour of woodlands and nature reserves, these sessions will offer opportunities for creative expression and therapeutic experiences. Participants will engage in mindfulness exercises, collaborative storytelling, and immersive arts activities, fostering a deeper bond with the natural world while nurturing their mental well-being and sense of community.

Total Cost: £1500

Nature Immersion Retreat in Wales: To culminate our impactful journey, we will organise a rejuvenating retreat in the breathtaking landscapes of Wales. Guided by the transformative principles of "The Work that Reconnects," this immersive experience will empower up to 15 young people to reflect on their journey, deepen their connection with nature, and explore pathways to continued advocacy and leadership in their communities. Through workshops, nature-based activities, and reflective practices, participants will emerge with renewed resilience and determination to effect positive change in the face of ecological challenges.
