Started on 24th May 2022 Bukesa, Kampala, Uganda

The Slum Run helps young people play, sweat and have fun, but mostly importantly, it gives them access to a good education. We provide school fees and access to scholastic materials for children in Kampala’s slums, who could otherwise not afford them. We also train young people to become professional athletes.

This year, our 5km and 12km Slum run event will take place on Sunday 31st July 2022 in Bulenga, and proceeds will go towards the children’s school fees and the establishment of a fitness centre for them. The fitness centre will have a gym for our young athletes, but also a resource centre where they can access books, and other scholastic materials, to improve their literacy and excitement for learning.

Come run with us: It is undeniable that education is the greatest equalizer, and we are betting on this to guarantee a future for these young men and women. At the same time, we want to nurture talent. Who knows, the next Cheptegei or Inzikuru might be in the slums! To effectively do this, we need your help.

  • Sponsor the T-shirts and sports kit needed for the Slum Runners
  • Sponsor the catering for the event
  • Compete as an individual or business
  • Sponsor our marketing material and include your business logo
  • Sponsor participating Slum Runners for their fees and requirements.  Up to 20 athletes can be sponsored this year at 250000 UGX (£53) each.
  • Support us with prizes for participants
  • We are also interested in partnering with organizations and businesses who want to see Uganda improve its performance in athletics, starting with grassroots youth competitions.

Our Story

The Slum Run was inspired by a rather tragic event in which we lost our friend Ola. Ola, then 12yrs worked in the quarry so he could afford his school fees. His parents, victims of the Kony war in Northern Uganda, could not afford to pay for his school. But passionate about his education, he sought all possible means to support himself. Unfortunately in 2011, he was trapped in the quarry and his workplace became his death bed. Ola was not alone. There are so many young girls and boys like Ola, who are talented and yet economically disadvantaged, who are risking their lives every day trying to get a good education.

In 2012 we started the Slum Run to guarantee a better future for children, especially those in Kampala’s slums, who could not afford their school fees. Since its inception, the Slum run has directly supported over 300 children with school fees and benefited over 1200 through sports training and access to educational materials. Through our activities, we also ensure that children are not exploited as labourers and that they stay off the streets, where they are exposed to bad social vices like drug use and theft.

Participating in the Slum Run 2022 event will be an experience you will never forget. The event area is mainly selected to fit the ideology of running in the Slum Run. You should also expect to see hundreds of local children cheering you around the circuit.

Your safety will be one of our biggest priorities as we have a medical team and an ambulance for those who might get injured.
