Help Jordan S. Daniel tell the story of the original sick kids hospital, in Edinburgh, before it closed in 2021!
My name is Jordan S Daniel, I'm an award winning writer, performer and presenter. I work across the UK in the arts, making my stamp on the world and it's challenges. But before I was able to do this. There was a part of me that no one knew about. I spent my childhood in the sick kids hospital, mainly ward 1 and 6, and the building became my second home; and the staff, my second family.
I have cystic fibrosis and if it weren't for this hospital - I wouldn't be alive today. And now? I need your help to tell the stories of the hospital before it closed in 2021, and moved to merge with the royal infirmary.
This crowdfunder is going to help me write a first draft of my play - The Sick Kids! A fiction play inspired by my own experiences and those I interview about the building. I am going to spend a year speaking with people who have their own memories and how they've shaped them today.
With your pledge, I will be able to:
1. Pay myself for my time writing a first draft of the story and interviewing 5 people;
2. Pay 5 interviewees selected from an open call for their time;
3. Work for one day with a director and group of actors on the first draft of a script
This is a story we need. A chance for us to share how this building made such an impact on our lives for decades. A message of hope. And a testament to the incredible work the staff did for patients before its closure.
The interviewees will of course be anonymised and details of their experiences not shared, within an ethical framework. Patient details and anything else related to and within the NHS will also not be shared or made available to Jordan S Daniel in line with GPRD.
This is a chance for the community to connect, heal and my chance as a writer to fictionalise a story that celebrates the hospital's identity before it closed.
