THE ROSELAND CENTRE - The Future

RCN 1186095, Truro

We are a restored, residential, Charity Centre in the heart of The Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall, facilitating and supporting outdoor learning, adventure experiences, Community Hub activities, cultural and artistic opportunities, and training spaces for hire.

The Roseland Centre

In the summer of 2022, The Roseland Centre charity successfully raised funds to buy the former Cornwall Council outdoor activity and education Centre in the village of St. Just-in-Roseland, Cornwall.

Located on Cornwall's scenic Roseland Peninsula, in the village of St. Just-in-Roseland, this former Victorian Methodist School was for many years successfully run as Cornwall Outdoors, Activity and Education Centre and was used by organisations such as the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), British Canoeing, (now PaddleUK), as well as local and out of County schools, groups and individuals from all backgrounds, abilities and needs. It was well known as the place where primary school groups from around Cornwall and the wider areas, and even Continental Europe, came to engage in safe, enjoyable outdoor learning and activity such as learning to kayak, canoe, and sail, as well as being challenged by orienteering and cohesive experiences in the beautiful Cornish countryside.

We will be continuing in this tradition and scope of business, offering children and adults life-changing experiences in an outdoor, challenging natural setting. We offer residential accommodation with access to community classes, wellbeing support, 1:1 mentoring, specialist activity for SEN groups and outdoor soft/hard skill training, with particular emphasis on water-based activities which will initially be organised by local outdoor activity providers. We are situated in the heart of St. Just in Roseland near St Just Creek, which is ideally suited for sailing and all kinds of water sport experiences, whilst nearby Summers Beach is one of the most scenic places in the area to learn how to paddleboard. There are also opportunities for sea kayaking and windsurfing, as well as land-based activities including hiking, camping, bushcraft and orienteering.

Within our Centre we offer hireable space and a residential group setting for schools, groups and businesses. The Centre has been renovated and made commercially compliant over the last 14 months, and now boasts fantastic facilities such as accessible showers, a self-catering kitchen, three dormitories with bunk beds, and two separate rooms each with bunk beds.

We operate 364 days a year but specifically throughout the Autumn/Winter months we plan to offer a similar accommodation model to the YHA, supporting and providing for local community events, training organisations, and youth groups/out of school programs that need outdoor classrooms/life skill-based accreditation for children who are out of school and challenged by everyday life, (NEET). We have started community facilities such as a Permaculture Garden for volunteer engagement and support. We plan to integrate a Community Food Share project, perhaps even a volunteer-run village shop.

We believe The Roseland Centre is the perfect place to host residential experiences for children and adults. With a capacity for 34 staying on site in comfortable, safe and functional dormitory style bedrooms with showers and amenities, a fully equipped kitchen, dining hall, outdoor green space and communal rooms, our Centre is a haven, nestled above the quiet and nature rich creeks and tributaries of the River Fal.

We provide schools and youth groups with an opportunity to engage in various outdoor activities and learning within a natural and inspiring environment. The Roseland Peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (AONB). We want to ensure that young people and adults, whether from the Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall, or elsewhere in the UK & abroad, can come to visit this inspiring place, learn new skills through tailored classes and sessions, make friends, and explore all that the location has to offer.

We know how lucky we are to live in such a breath-taking natural environment, but we believe the potential provided by the outdoors is even greater when everyone gets to share in it! Inspiring people of all ages in outdoor learning, sustainable thinking and adventurous experiences is more important than ever for everyone's physical and mental health wellbeing.

As an environmentally aware Centre, the refurbished building will hopefully evolve into a local beacon of sustainability awareness and practice, using renewables in its operation and providing ecologically sensitive experiences.

We wish to encourage education through nature, encouraging children and adults of all ages to live differently, providing an ecological and environmentally friendly context to develop and expand their knowledge. This would be in accordance with the recently launched Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change strategy, to establish the UK as a world leader in sustainability and climate change education by 2030.

Our Campaign - The Future of TRC:

Our organization is dedicated to inspiring young minds through the power of nature, exciting outdoor, explorative play and activities that challenge and stretch solution focused thinking. Coupled with our residential accommodation and exclusive on-site facilities, the TRC experience fosters a deep connection to the natural world around us, a wider understanding of our community strength and resilience and stands as a gateway to the potential of opportunity and growth to all ages, backgrounds and abilities of users.

Your support is crucial to keep our programs, activities and Centre open and accessible to all. We need to raise money to cover our core costs, ensuring we can continue to:

  • Offer memorable, meaningful and inspiring outdoor experiences.
  • Build a stronger community. We provide a safe and supportive space for children and young people to connect with their peers and the environment.
  • Educate for a sustainable future. We equip the next generation with the knowledge and skills to become environmental stewards.
  • Every donation, no matter how small, makes a big difference. Your support will help us nurture the next generation of conservationists and create a brighter future for our planet.

1723560715_whatsapp_image_2024-07-15_at_19.34.09_9ff9f92f.jpg

In short, we wish to achieve a stable, sustainable future and be able to continue to support individuals and groups from all over Cornwall and beyond with impactful services, activity and education of the kind that creates magical memories, thoughtful and inspiring change and those all-important, transferrable life skills.

With that we need to fundraise for the core costs that operating our Charity Centre demand. Our team of employed staff and volunteers are tirelessly busy forging positive and meaningful contacts with individuals, businesses, volunteers, other charities and potential customers from all over the UK, but we still need your help!

Please support us so THE ROSELAND CENTRE can continue to support others.

Thank you so much in advance!

The TRC Team.

Fantastic Evening - Thank you all.

It all came together in the end!

Massive thanks to The Idle Rocks, St Mawes, for letting us take over the helm for the evening as we hosted our fundraising dinner event on the very fine evening of Wednesday 9th October 2024. Lovely company, fantastic food and a wonderful setting. We would like to give our sincere thanks to Sir Edward Bolitho who agreed to be our guest of honour and thanks also to our Chair of Trustees for controlling the order of service and performing with mic in hand!

Even more thanks to all the generous, local businesses and community members who donated prizes for our auction and raffle event. Great to see everyone, thanks so much for making the effort to come along and support our Charity. Well done to our Deputy Centre Manager Mandy, who worked so hard to craft the nuts and bolts of the planning and printing.

The auction went well but it was the raffle that raised the roof!

Very much a "milestone reminder" that there is generosity and kindness out there - we feel very lucky to be part of the journey.

OUR FIRST QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER - Autumn 2024

Dear Friends of The Roseland Centre – Welcome to our first quarterly newsletter!

AUTUMN 2024

GENERAL

We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Summer and made the most of any sunshine before this Autumnal cloak surrounded us. This is our very first quarterly newsletter update – we very much hope it will be well received.

Since our formal opening on June 1st of this year, the Roseland Centre (“TRC”) has blossomed into a truly special place. We are working hard to become a beacon of community support and a catalyst for personal growth, outdoor learning and adventure, sustainable choices and a flagship for programmes and experiences that are unique and meaningful – right here on The Roseland Peninsula.

RESIDENTIAL

What a Summer it has been! The Centre, facilities, resources and dedicated staff/volunteers were stretched to meet the demand during our first warm season of trade. Local schools invested in bespoke residential packages of indoor and outdoor activities, with evening games and celebrations to round off their stay. Our softer activities have ranged from problem-solving and team building challenges to bushcraft and “art attack” workshops, music and creative sessions, map reading, and local beach cleans. Our harder activities such as paddle sports, sailing and rock climbing, have been made possible with huge thanks to local adventure activity providers Canoe Cornwall, Roseland Paddle & Sail, and Via Ferrata Cornwall.

HOLIDAY ACTIVITY CLUB

Our Holiday Activity Clubs have proved to be very successful and have welcomed lots of local children from as far away as Grampound and Tregony. They are themed and full of indoor and outdoor learning such as science experiments, bushcraft, musical festival celebrations, “art attack” sessions and Olympic Games celebrations.  Holiday Clubs are set to continue and since our very first delivery 28th-30th May 2024, these clubs have welcomed 116 children, and with half-term approaching, that number is set to rise.

FACILITIES

Our accessible facilities have been tried, tested and tweaked by the fantastic local accessible activity charity Active8, that aims to empower and motivate young people aged 14-30 years old, who have a physical disability. Our two Wetroom showers and toilets have performed well, and we gained a rating of Level 5 from the Food Standards Agency for our lovely little commercial kitchen, which also has been stretched since June 1st, when we were cooking for up to 34 at a time.

The summer months certainly put our Centre to the test, and we are delighted to report that our facilities and staff all worked very well to make sure that every aspect of the TRC experience was properly looked after and worthy of success. We believe the innovative activities devised and delivered by our dedicated, qualified, staff have created lasting memories for all those who participated.

The green spaces that surround our Centre have been transformed into areas to promote teamwork, outdoor play, and challenging activities. These experiences foster essential soft skills such as trust, leadership, resilience, and perseverance, equipping participants with valuable tools for both personal and academic success in the future.

COMMUNITY

Since September this year, we have expanded our offerings to include crafting clubs and magical day events designed to cater to the specific needs of our community. Our morning Pioneers Café provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the elderly, who can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, receive IT support, information and guidance around memory loss/the onset of dementia and learn new digital skills from our Digital Champion, (Duty Centre Manager Mandy). In support of this we are currently in talks with a national initiative network called Sustainable Prevention, Innovation and INvolvement NETwork (SPIINNET). It will combine research power from 14 universities across the UK with specialist organisations and bring together individuals living with dementia, carers and family members, researchers, and people working for charities, health and social care services and industries. SPINNET will unite existing networks and umbrella organisations and deliver a programme that will use and make connections between the experience, knowledge and resources of people across the network.

Activities will include workshops where people can meet to design research projects together, training events, funding innovative ideas, meetings to raise awareness about dementia and prevention, and annual conferences to share learning.

For younger members of our community, we have launched a collaboration with the Pawprint Family, which offers exciting after-school activities, supporting life skills and creative arts for young members of the community. The children are currently crafting lots of thoughtful artwork and nature-based creations inspired by the beloved children's book "Stick Man."

Additionally, our Moo Music sessions provide a magical dance, small world and play experience for babies and toddlers, fostering early childhood development whilst supporting local families.

Our commitment to community service extends beyond our core programs. The Community Garden, first established in 2023, has flourished under the dedicated efforts of our trustees and volunteers. This thriving garden has provided fresh produce for our visiting groups, fostering a sense of connection with nature whilst promoting conversation and action around sustainable living.

1729612272_1729612269458.jpeg 1729612272_1729612269484.jpeg

As responsible corporate citizens, we have also taken steps to protect our local environment. We have partnered with the Marine Conservation Society to become Beach Clean Leaders, organizing regular beach clean-ups in the local area. These efforts contribute to the vital, national work of preserving our coastlines and oceans for future generations.

VOLUNTEERING

We always welcome individual volunteers and group collaborations for volunteer events and projects that run seasonally. Our Community Garden volunteer group would love to see more green fingered helpers through the gates – please do get in touch if you feel you can support this.

MOVING FORWARD

Looking ahead, TRC is brimming with exciting ideas and initiatives. We are actively exploring the development of a satellite site that will offer even more opportunities for outdoor education and adventure. This expansion will solidify our position as a recognised provider of outdoor learning experiences and further enhance our reputation as a hub for community engagement and personal growth.

We are also very close to launching our Charity’s new website - www.theroselandcentre.org The website you see now is out of date, but our new site should be available online within the next month and will allow you to book experiences and hire residential accommodation at the click of a button – watch this space!

The journey that has brought us to this point has been marked by collaboration, dedication, and a shared passion for creating a positive impact. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the talented team of individuals who have worked tirelessly to make The Roseland Centre the extraordinary place that it is today.

If you wish to support our Charity or join us in our journey and volunteer, please do get in contact – we would love to hear from you.
