Michael Donaghy taught me at Birkbeck College, London. I was a working class boy from Basildon who at the time did not know much about poetry. He told me I had ability and encouraged me to keep going. He was brilliant and funny with an astonishing knowledge of poetry that was infectious. I think of him most days. I hope this award really helps someone. It is definitely in Michael’s spirit that it should. I think he would love this.
