Aim: Our project aims to combat loneliness and depression in middle-aged Jewish men through social connection, workshops, and peer support.
Many middle-aged Jewish men experience significant life changes such as divorce or bereavement, which can lead to profound feelings of loneliness, depression, and social isolation. These challenges can negatively impact their mental health and increase their risk of suicide. Recognizing this critical need for targeted support, The Men's Shed Project in Salford, England, United Kingdom, offers a dedicated and accessible range of services designed to foster connection, build resilience, and improve overall wellbeing for this specific demographic.
The Men's Shed Project:
This project, based in Salford, England, United Kingdom, is specifically designed for middle-aged Jewish men facing loneliness, depression, or social isolation due to life changes such as divorce or bereavement. The aim of The Men's Shed Project is to help reduce risks associated with mental health challenges by providing a supportive social space open every weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights) for 3 hours. During these sessions, men can enjoy hot food, engage in casual social interaction with peers facing similar situations, and participate in team-building activities designed to foster connection and peer support.
In addition to the open weekend sessions, The Men's Shed Project offers the following support:
Weekly 1-Hour Mental Health Workshops:
These professionally facilitated workshops are designed for small groups of individuals who have experienced varying levels of mental health challenges. Each weekly session explores the cognitive and emotional landscape surrounding these experiences, examining thoughts and feelings before, during, and after challenging periods. The programme emphasizes the development of personalized strategies for managing difficult thought patterns, fostering hope and a sense of purpose, and cultivating supportive connections with peers who share similar experiences.
Small Group Support:
Dedicated mentors offer a safe and confidential space for flexible and ongoing support to small groups of up to 3 individuals. They provide an individualized approach within the group setting to help users explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, develop daily management strategies, and build a personal "toolkit" for the future.
We provide 6 hours of mentoring per week. Sessions are typically an hour long, and the number of sessions is not fixed, ensuring users receive the support they need for as long as they need it.
Our mentors are trained in mental health, suicide prevention, and understanding trauma.
Counselling in Small Groups:
Confidential counselling sessions are available for small groups of individuals aged 16-30. Our qualified counsellors provide a non-judgmental space to explore thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviours to improve emotional and mental wellbeing. These sessions are provided for 4 hours per week. There is no fixed number of sessions, allowing groups to continue until members feel able to manage independently. Our qualified counselling team is dedicated to providing a supportive and effective therapeutic environment.
